Who this process is for

If you’re deciding whether to prioritise this campus after CAT, here’s what matters. IIM Bangalore’s flagship PGP (MBA) is a standalone admissions process. It is not CAP. If you are targeting Bengaluru’s recruiter market and IIMB’s published, transparent weight tables, this guide is for you. You need a valid CAT score, you must clear IIMB’s first shortlist floors, then you convert through Personal Interview (PI) and Written Ability Test (WAT) on IIMB’s post-PI composite.

Primary sources: IIMB admission process, the cycle PDF admissions-process-PGP-2026.pdf, and domestic admissions overview. Context: IIM Bangalore review and selection criteria explained. Data stamped September 2026.

How the process works

IIMB is unusually clear about stages. For the PGP 2026-28 cycle (CAT 2025), the institute describes the flow as follows.

  1. Eligibility. Bachelor’s degree with at least 50% (45% for SC/ST/PwD), or a completed professional degree (CA/CS/ICWA(CMA)/FIAI), plus a valid CAT score on the application date (admission process).
  2. First shortlist. Candidates need a positive raw score in every CAT section and must clear category-wise sectional and aggregate percentile minima. For General category in the PGP 2026 PDF annexure, those minima are VARC 80, DILR 75, QA 75, aggregate 85. The PDF states clearly that interview-call scores are typically higher than these first-shortlist floors.
  3. Pre-PI score. Among first-shortlist candidates, IIMB builds a pre-PI score with weights CAT 55, Class 10 10, Class 12 10, bachelor’s 10, work experience / professional course 10, gender diversity 5. The 55 CAT points split as VARC 19, DILR 21, QA 15. Gender diversity applies only at pre-PI. Top performers in selected buckets (for example top CAT scorers and top adjusted bachelor’s scores in some streams) can auto-qualify for PI, then compete normally post-PI.
  4. PI and WAT. Same day, same location. WAT is about 30 minutes. Work-experience quality is re-scored by the interview panel.
  5. Final offers. Post-PI weights for called candidates: PI 40, WAT 10, CAT 25, Class 10 5, Class 12 5, bachelor’s 5, work experience / professional course 10. The 25 CAT points split VARC 8.75, DILR 10, QA 6.25. Offers are category-wise on post-PI scores.

Two letters of reference are mandatory in the online application. Incomplete reference sections block submission. That is an IIMB-specific operational detail many candidates miss until the deadline week.

Actual interview cutoffs inside the first shortlist are not a single public “safe percentile.” The institute says called candidates scored higher than the floor table. Do not invent year-specific call percentiles from forums.

Profile implications

CAT-heavy profiles. Pre-PI is CAT-majority (55/100 style points). DILR carries the largest sectional share inside those 55 points. A lopsided CAT with a weak DILR hurts Bangalore more than candidates expect. Protect all three sections using CAT exam guide plans, then push overall performance for rank inside the pool.

Academics-heavy profiles. Thirty pre-PI points sit in Class 10, Class 12, and bachelor’s (10 each), with normalisation. Consistent academics help you clear the call bar when CAT is merely “good, not legendary.” Soft boards are a real drag at IIMB relative to institutes that down-weight Class 10/12 later.

Work-experience profiles. Up to 10 pre-PI points for months of paid post-degree work (formula in the PDF), with professional course as an alternative max. Post-PI, work-ex quality is multiplied by panel judgment. Our view: quantity without quality is weaker at Bangalore than at campuses that score months more mechanically. Be ready to explain impact, not tenure.

Interview and WAT. Final stage is interview-led (40) with a meaningful WAT (10). CAT drops to 25. A strong call with a weak PI will not convert. Prepare with the WAT-PI guide and practice note-writing under 30 minutes.

How Bangalore differs from Ahmedabad and Calcutta

Versus IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore publishes cleaner pre/post weight tables and uses WAT rather than AWT branding. Ahmedabad’s published final FCS for recent procedure notes is 50% PI, 10% AWT, 40% prior composite (Admission Procedure PDF), so Ahmedabad keeps more of the pre-interview composite alive at the end. Bangalore reweights heavily toward PI+WAT once you are called. Ahmedabad also runs stricter published overall floors in recent shortlisting notes (General overall 95 with high sectionals). See IIM Ahmedabad selection criteria.

Versus IIM Calcutta, Calcutta’s domestic policy for MBA 2026-28 shortlists with CAT 56, Class 10 10, Class 12 15, gender diversity 4 (total 85), then finals with PI 48, WAT 8, CAT 30, academic diversity 6, work experience 8 (domestic admission procedure). Calcutta is more PI-heavy in the final 100-point score than Bangalore (48 vs 40) and lighter on WAT (8 vs 10). Calcutta’s Stage I Open floors emphasise VARC and DILR at 80 with QA at 75 and overall 85. Bangalore’s General first shortlist is 80/75/75/85. Small differences, but they change who survives the gate.

Common mistakes

  1. Treating first-shortlist floors as “I will get a call.”
  2. Ignoring DILR’s outsized share inside IIMB’s CAT points.
  3. Leaving reference letters to the last day.
  4. Claiming internship months as full-time work experience.
  5. Preparing only puzzles for PI and skipping WAT note practice.
  6. Comparing IIMB odds using Ahmedabad coaching myths.

Frequently asked questions

Is IIM Bangalore in CAP?

No. IIMB runs its own PI/WAT process. CAP is separate. Read CAP for IIMs explained.

What is the difference between qualifying, call, and convert?

Qualifying floors let you stay eligible. A call/shortlist means you enter WAT/AWT and PI. Convert means the final composite produced an offer. Mixing the three layers is how percentile screenshots mislead. See cutoffs explained.

Do sectional cutoffs still matter if my overall percentile is high?

Yes at many campuses. Overall strength cannot paper over a failed sectional floor when the year’s PDF requires both. Confirm overall and sectional rows for your category in the live policy note.

What changes in selection criteria every year?

Composite weights, application-rating tables, diversity points, and published floors can all move. Never reuse last year’s spreadsheet without opening this year’s institute or CAP PDF.

Where are the official weight tables?

On the admission process page and the linked PGP admissions PDF for the cycle. Prefer those over any secondary summary, including this one, when numbers conflict.

Do gender diversity points help in the final offer?

For the PGP 2026 process described by IIMB, gender diversity is used in the pre-PI score only, not in the post-PI composite.

How much can PI move the needle?

With PI at 40 and WAT at 10, interview-day performance is the largest controllable block after you are called. CAT and academics still matter, but they are mostly locked.
