IIM Selection Criteria Explained

Every IIM sets its own shortlist and final composite. BLACKI-style campuses run independent AWT/WAT-PI cycles; CAP shares interview logistics across participating institutes, then each still ranks candidates alone.

There is no single IIM formula

If you’re comparing how IIMs shortlist, here’s what matters. There is no single IIM selection formula. Treat “BLACKI” as a shorthand for older, independently run campuses, and CAP as a shared interview/WAT pipeline for a defined set of participating IIMs. In both worlds, final offers are institute-specific.

Data as of: September 2026. Policies change every CAT cycle; link the PDF for your target year.

The shared spine

Across nearly all flagship MBA/PGP programmes:

  1. Valid CAT score and programme eligibility
  2. Shortlist for written test + interview (names vary: AWT, WAT, PI)
  3. Final composite score → merit / waitlist → offer

What differs is which inputs get how many points, and whether Stage 2 is run alone or via CAP.

Independent campuses (including BLACKI)

Older and several newer IIMs publish standalone admission policies. Illustrative, not exhaustive:

IIM Bangalore (example of transparent weights)

For candidates called to interview, IIMB publishes post-PI weights including PI 40, WAT 10, CAT 25, plus class 10/12/bachelor’s and work experience / professional course points. Pre-PI shortlisting uses a different mix (CAT 55 among other factors). Source: IIMB admission process.

IIM Calcutta

Stage I uses minimum sectional and overall CAT percentiles (open category example for CAT 2025 cycle: VARC ≥80, DILR ≥80, QA ≥75, overall ≥85). Stage II shortlist composite weights CAT heavily (56) with Class 10/12 and gender diversity. Final selection weights include CAT 30, PI 48, WAT 8, academic diversity 6, work experience 8. IIM Ahmedabad

IIMA shortlists for Analytical Writing Test (AWT) and PI using CAT performance plus application rating / academic-category rules, then evaluates AWT + PI for final offers. Minimum CAT floors are published (for example high overall and sectional thresholds for general category candidates), but meeting floors is not the same as receiving a call. CAP: shared interview, separate merit

The Common Admission Process is a joint initiative so participating IIMs can run PI and WAT together. CAP’s own site states that admission policy, merit list finalisation, and offers remain independent at each participating IIM (CAP 2025).

For the 2025 cycle, eight IIMs participated (Bodh Gaya, Jammu, Kashipur, Nagpur, Ranchi, Sirmaur, Tiruchirappalli, Udaipur), with Bodh Gaya coordinating. Shortlisting for CAP PI/WAT used category-wise overall and sectional CAT percentiles published for that cycle (general category example: overall 95 with 75 in each section, per CAP coordinator communications mirrored on the CAP portal ecosystem). Always verify the live CAP site for the year you apply.

Practical implications:

  • One WAT/PI performance can feed multiple CAP campuses you opted for
  • Skipping a programme in the CAP form typically means that IIM will not consider you
  • A CAP call is not an offer from all eight

How to read any IIM policy PDF in 10 minutes

  1. Find minimum CAT percentiles (overall + sectional).
  2. Find Stage 2 shortlist weights (what earns the interview).
  3. Find final composite weights (what earns the seat).
  4. Note diversity, academics, and work-ex formulas.
  5. Confirm reservation rules and document deadlines.

Myths worth ignoring

MythReality
“99%ile = BLACKI”Necessary for many profiles, never sufficient alone
“CAP is one admission”Shared process; separate merit lists
“WAT is optional fluff”Often 8-10 points in final composites at top campuses
“Older IIMs ignore academics”Application rating / board marks still matter at several

How composites usually evolve

CAT weight often shrinks from shortlist to final as PI/WAT rise. That is why interview prep is not optional after a high percentile.

Profile modelling

Engineers with soft boards, work-ex candidates, and non-engineering profiles face different composite incentives. Read the PDF tables for academics, diversity, and work-ex rather than assuming CAT is everything.

After shortlists drop

Download every relevant PDF again. Update your sheet. Begin WAT/PI immediately. Candidates who wait a week after calls gift convert odds to those who started mock interviews on day one.

Closing note

Primary documents beat hearsay. If a claim in this page disagrees with a newer institute PDF or official notice, trust the primary source and email corrections to anchal@iimhq.com via the contact page.

Additional practical notes

Write it down. Brands stick in memory; EMI does not. Keep a one-page note with total fee, how they define median salary, the kind of job you want, and why this campus helps.

If you hold multiple offers, decline cleanly and early enough that waitlists can move. Ghosting campuses helps no one and can burn alumni goodwill in narrow functions.

For corrections when institute PDFs change after we stamp a page, use the contact channel with the URL and primary source. We update factual errors promptly under the disclosure policy.

Finally, remember that shortlists are personal. Two strong candidates can correctly choose opposite campuses when city, debt, and pedagogy differ. Our job is evidence and clear recommendations for your constraints.

Frequently asked questions

Does BLACKI include Lucknow and Kozhikode?

“BLACKI” is informal shorthand (Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow, Kozhikode, Indore). Always use the institute’s own policy PDF, not the acronym.

If I clear CAP cutoffs, am I shortlisted everywhere in CAP?

You must meet the CAP shortlist rules and opt into each programme on the CAP form. Institutes may still apply additional filters before offers.

If you’re comparing how IIMs shortlist, here’s what matters. ### Where should I verify criteria?

Institute admissions pages and the official CAP site for that year. Do not rely on coaching WhatsApp forwards.

What is the difference between qualifying, call, and convert?

Qualifying floors let you stay eligible. A call/shortlist means you enter WAT/AWT and PI. Convert means the final composite produced an offer. Mixing the three layers is how percentile screenshots mislead. See cutoffs explained.

Do sectional cutoffs still matter if my overall percentile is high?

Yes at many campuses. Overall strength cannot paper over a failed sectional floor when the year’s PDF requires both. Confirm overall and sectional rows for your category in the live policy note.

What changes in selection criteria every year?

If you’re comparing how IIMs shortlist, here’s what matters. Composite weights, application-rating tables, diversity points, and published floors can all move. Never reuse last year’s spreadsheet without opening this year’s institute or CAP PDF.
