What CAP is (and is not)
If you’re in or eyeing CAP, here’s what matters. CAP (Common Admission Process) coordinates shortlisting and interviews for a set of newer IIMs so candidates do not sit entirely separate PI loops for every campus. It is not a single joint offer for all IIMs, and it does not replace institute-specific final offer rules.
BLACKI institutes (Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow, Kozhikode, Indore) typically run standalone processes. Confirm participation each year on the official CAP site published for that CAT cycle. Our reference cycle for documented detail is CAP 2025, coordinated by IIM Bodh Gaya.
Data as of: September 2026. Participation lists and percentile floors change; treat the live CAP portal as law.
What CAP does and does not do
| CAP usually helps with | CAP does not mean |
|---|---|
| Shared application / PI logistics for participating IIMs | One rank list that fills every seat |
| Reducing duplicate interview travel for some candidates | Identical cutoffs across campuses |
| A common calendar window | That old IIMs are included |
| One WAT/PI day that multiple opted campuses can use | Automatic offers from every CAP IIM |
The CAP site itself states that admission policy, merit list finalisation, and subsequent admission offers are independent at each participating IIM (CAP 2025). That sentence is the whole product: shared logistics, separate merit.
Who participated in CAP 2025 (reference cycle)
For CAP 2025, eight IIMs participated:
- IIM Bodh Gaya (coordinator)
- IIM Jammu
- IIM Kashipur
- IIM Nagpur
- IIM Ranchi
- IIM Sirmaur
- IIM Trichy (Tiruchirappalli)
- IIM Udaipur
Other IIMs you might expect in a “newer campus” mental model may sit outside CAP in a given year. For example, public cycle reporting around CAP 2025 noted campuses such as Raipur and Sambalpur not participating that year. Do not copy last year’s list into this year’s form. Always open the new CAP domain when it goes live after CAT results.

How CAP fits into the CAT year
A typical post-CAT path for CAP-interested candidates:
- Sit CAT and download the scorecard from iimcat.ac.in.
- Watch for CAP shortlist communication from the coordinating IIM.
- Register on that year’s CAP portal and opt into each MBA (and specialised MBA, if any) you actually want.
- Prefer interview cities if the form allows, then sit WAT/PI in the published window.
- Wait for separate offers or waitlists from each institute’s own site or mailer.
- Pay expression-of-interest / acceptance amounts per campus rules, not as one CAP fee.
Exact dates move every year. Bookmark the live CAP site and the participating institutes’ admissions pages.
Shortlisting vs final offer inside CAP
CAP shortlisting for PI/WAT is usually based on category-wise overall and sectional CAT percentiles published for that cycle. CAP 2025 communications described shortlisting against those floors, with the coordinating campus sending registration instructions.
We deliberately do not paste floating cutoff tables into this guide as eternal truth. Floors are cycle-specific. If you need the number for your category, open the CAP notice for your year. For how cutoff layers work in general, read cutoffs explained.
After WAT/PI, each participating IIM applies its own composite (CAT weight, PI weight, profile score, academics, and other published factors). Two candidates with the same CAP interview day can convert at one campus and miss another. That is expected, not a portal glitch.
CAP vs BLACKI: practical differences
| Dimension | CAP cluster | Typical BLACKI / standalone |
|---|---|---|
| Interview logistics | Shared portal and calendar | Institute-specific mailers and cities |
| Final merit | Independent per IIM | Independent per IIM |
| Brand / outcome band | Wide variance across participants | Generally denser older-campus networks |
| Form risk | Missing an opt-in drops that campus | Separate applications / portals |
| Travel | Often fewer duplicate loops | Multiple standalone PI trips possible |
Standalone examples we cite elsewhere include IIM Bangalore’s admission process, IIM Calcutta’s domestic procedure, and IIM Ahmedabad’s MBA admissions. Those pages are not CAP pages. Treat them as parallel tracks you may still need.
How to use CAP in a shortlist plan
- Sit CAT and check the year’s CAP participating institutes list.
- Apply to CAP and to any standalone IIMs you want (A/B/C/L/K/I, Mumbai, and others outside CAP).
- On the CAP form, select every programme you would actually join. CAP FAQ guidance is explicit: if you do not select an IIM’s MBA on the CAP form, that IIM will not consider you (CAP FAQ).
- Treat each CAP institute’s final conversion rules as separate even if PI logistics are shared.
- Read campus reviews before you treat every CAP call as equal: Trichy and Udaipur are not interchangeable with every baby IIM.
- Budget for multiple acceptance deposits if offers arrive close together.
- Keep WAT/PI prep serious; one weak day can hurt several opted campuses at once (WAT/PI guide).
Specialised MBA programmes inside CAP
Some participating IIMs offer specialised MBAs alongside the flagship. CAP forms in recent cycles asked candidates to opt into those programmes separately, and noted that CAP selections can overwrite earlier CAT-form preferences. Read eligibility on the institute site before you tick boxes. A specialised programme can be a better fit than the flagship for some careers, but only if you meet that programme’s rules.
SAP and campus-specific extras
Coordinating campuses sometimes run a supplementary process (for example SAP language in Bodh Gaya materials) alongside CAP. That does not merge merit lists into one CAP rank. It means an institute may collect additional interview inventory, then still publish its own offers. If your mailer mentions SAP or a campus-only round, read that institute’s policy PDF line by line.
Mistakes we see often
- Assuming a CAP PI call equals an old-IIM-level brand outcome. Campus brand and placement reports still differ widely. Start from reviews.
- Ignoring institute-specific waitlists after CAP interviews.
- Skipping standalone applications because CAP feels “enough.”
- Leaving programme opt-ins blank and discovering too late that a campus never considered you.
- Treating CAP sectional floors as BLACKI convert percentiles.
- Declining a CAP offer before modelling fees with fees and ROI and the ROI calculator.
- Using coaching WhatsApp lists instead of the CAP portal and institute PDFs.
Documents and logistics checklist
Before the CAP registration window closes:
- CAT scorecard PDF and registration details aligned with the form.
- Category / EWS / PwD certificates in the format the portal asks for.
- Class 10, 12, and bachelor’s marksheets scanned cleanly.
- Work-experience letters if you will claim months of experience.
- Passport-size photo and signature files in required size limits.
- A shortlist of campuses you would fund and join.
- Calendar blocks for preferred PI cities.
- A WAT practice plan for the two weeks before your slot.
- A fee model for at least two CAP campuses and one standalone backup.
- A folder for offer letters, waitlist mails, and payment receipts.
How CAP should change your prep, not your identity
CAP does not invent a new exam. You still need a competitive CAT profile with healthy sectionals. What changes is operational:
- More of your convert risk concentrates into one interview window.
- Form hygiene (opt-ins, programme ticks, city prefs) becomes decisive.
- Shortlist quality matters more because logistics feel “bundled” and candidates over-apply.

Where to go next
How CAP fits a full application season
A complete season usually includes:
- CAT registration and sectional prep (CAT guide).
- Parallel applications: CAP cluster plus any standalone BLACKI campuses you want.
- Shortlist season: CAP forms and standalone AWT/WAT-PI calendars.
- Offer season: institute-specific waitlists and fee deadlines.
Treating CAP as the entire strategy stranding you without Ahmedabad/Bangalore/Calcutta options if those were realistic.
CAP interview day realities
Shared logistics can mean shared cities and windows. Still bring campus-specific motivation. Panels can tell when your “why this IIM” is a find-and-replace paragraph. Read each participating campus review before the slot.
After CAP: offers are still campus-specific
You may receive multiple offers, one offer, or none from the campuses that interviewed you. Compare fee circulars and placement PDFs per campus. Use old vs new IIMs and best for ROI for framing, not CAP hearsay averages.
Checklist
- Confirm this year’s participating list on the official CAP portal.
- Calendar form deadlines the day shortlists appear.
- Keep standalone applications alive if BLACKI is in play.
- Separate “interviewed via CAP” from “brand tier.”
Frequently asked questions
Are all 21 IIMs in CAP?
No. Participation changes by year. Older IIMs generally stay outside. CAP 2025 had eight participants coordinated by Bodh Gaya. Check the official notice for your cycle.
Is CAP easier than IIMA or IIMB?
CAP campuses are not a single difficulty tier. Newer institutes often publish lower CAT shortlist bars than BLACKI in a given cycle, but conversion still depends on PI, profile composites, and seat math. “Easier process logistics” is not the same as “easier admit.”
If I clear CAP shortlist floors, am I interviewed for every CAP IIM?
Only for programmes you opt into on the CAP form, subject to that year’s rules. Missing an opt-in usually means that campus will not consider you.
Does one bad PI ruin every CAP campus?
Your performance feeds the campuses you selected. A weak interview can hurt multiple merit lists. That is why we treat CAP WAT/PI as high leverage.
If you’re in or eyeing CAP, here’s what matters. ### Numbers stamped for?
September 2026, using CAP 2025 as the documented reference cycle. Replace every list and floor with the live portal for your attempt year.
What is the difference between qualifying, call, and convert?
Qualifying floors let you stay eligible. A call/shortlist means you enter WAT/AWT and PI. Convert means the final composite produced an offer. Mixing the three layers is how percentile screenshots mislead. See cutoffs explained.
Do sectional cutoffs still matter if my overall percentile is high?
Yes at many campuses. Overall strength cannot paper over a failed sectional floor when the year’s PDF requires both. Confirm overall and sectional rows for your category in the live policy note.
What changes in selection criteria every year?
If you’re in or eyeing CAP, here’s what matters. Composite weights, application-rating tables, diversity points, and published floors can all move. Never reuse last year’s spreadsheet without opening this year’s institute or CAP PDF.
