Our verdict

We recommend IIM Lucknow as a strong shortlist when household ROI matters as much as BLACKI signalling. Prefer Ahmedabad or Bangalore when the strongest pan-India brand or Bengaluru market access is decisive. Prefer Kozhikode when campus lifestyle and #3 NIRF rank matter more than Lucknow’s fee edge. Skip if you will treat anything outside A/B as personal failure, or if you need a metro campus lifestyle as a non-negotiable.

On the NIRF Management Ranking 2025 Lucknow placed #5 with score 77.97, ahead of IIM Mumbai (#6) and IIM Calcutta (#7). That ranking is supporting evidence, not my entire rating. Our editorial score of 4.5 / 5 reflects solid placements, comparatively strong ROI among old IIMs, and a brand that sits just below the A/B ceiling for some consulting and finance recruiters.

The institute publishes fee structure PDFs for PGP and PGP-ABM on its master of business administration / PGP page. The 2025-27 fee structure PDF is commonly cited at about ₹20.75 lakh aggregate; always open the PDF footnotes for what mess, deposits, and extras exclude (fee structure link used on institute communications). Placement evidence lives on the institute’s placement reports and related report indexes, including Final Placement Report materials for recent batches. For the 2023-25 finals cycle, widely cited institute-linked figures cluster near average CTC ₹32.3 LPA and median CTC ₹31 LPA. Re-open the latest PDF before you model take-home pay, and separate CTC from fixed cash.

Who this is for

Best for

  • ROI-conscious applicants who want BLACKI outcomes without the highest absolute fees in the old-IIM set
  • Profiles targeting consulting, banking and NBFC roles, FMCG sales and marketing, or conglomerate general management programmes
  • Candidates comfortable with a residential Lucknow campus rather than Bengaluru or Mumbai daily city life
  • Dual-offer holders comparing L versus K or L versus I on fee, culture, and function rather than rank memes alone
  • Families who need a clearer payback path on education debt while still buying an old-IIM signal

Best not for

  • Applicants who will only be happy with Ahmedabad or Bangalore brand perception and will resent Lucknow socially
  • People who focus on metro lifestyle and need weekend product meetups in Koramangala as part of their MBA thesis
  • People who treat NIRF integers as identity and will spiral if a peer joins a higher-ranked campus
  • Candidates unwilling to open primary fee and placement PDFs and who rely on WhatsApp highest-CTC screenshots

Concrete profiles. A CAT 99.5%ile engineer with two years in IT services who wants consulting or FMCG and whose household is fee-sensitive is a classic Lucknow fit. A markets-obsessed candidate with calls from Calcutta and Lucknow should weight Joka finance culture carefully before defaulting to L on fee alone. A product-only aspirant with a Bangalore call should not pick Lucknow merely because NIRF 2025 placed L above C.

Read the PDF footnotes. Mess charges and some living costs often sit outside the headline programme total. Deposits may be refundable. Do not compare Lucknow’s ₹20.75 lakh line to Bangalore’s ₹26 lakh line without checking whether hostel is included in each. Inclusions differ across IIMs and will distort Excel sheets.

On payback. Using median CTC near ₹31 LPA against a ₹20.75 lakh fee, simple fee vs median payback is well under one year pre-tax. Our editorial paybackYears: 0.7 assumes education debt and post-tax cash, still among the stronger ROI stories in the old-IIM set when you place near median. Taxes, variable pay that does not fully pay out, and living costs after graduation stretch real payback. Model a downside at 20 percent below median fixed cash before you celebrate.

Loan caveats. Public and private lenders know IIM Lucknow. Interest still compounds during the course if you take a moratorium. Need-based aid and scholarships may exist; check current institute pages rather than assuming aid will erase the gap to a free ride. Do not accept on the assumption that a PPO will clear the loan by month three.

Versus higher-fee peers. Ahmedabad’s published PGP 2025-27 programme fee is ₹27.50 lakh (IIMA admissions). Bangalore’s domestic PGP 2026-28 fee is ₹26.00 lakh plus mess and caution (IIMB financial aid page). A ₹5 to ₹7 lakh fee gap versus those campuses is material for many households even when median CTCs at A/B sit a few lakhs higher. Lucknow’s ROI score of 4.6 / 5 reflects that gap, not a claim that L beats A on brand.

ROI verdict. Strong shortlist for fee-aware BLACKI seekers. Weak only if you under-place badly relative to median while carrying full debt.

All-in cost, scholarships, and opportunity cost

The ~₹20.75 lakh aggregate is the number families screenshot. Mess and living still sit outside many headline totals.

Read the PDF footnotes. Mess charges and some living costs often sit outside the programme line. Deposits may be refundable. Do not compare Lucknow’s ₹20.75 lakh line to Bangalore’s ₹26 lakh line without checking whether hostel is included in each. Inclusions differ across IIMs and will distort Excel sheets.

Need-based aid and scholarships. Check current institute pages rather than assuming aid will erase the gap to a free ride. Apply early if you qualify. Do not accept on the assumption that a PPO will clear the loan by month three.

Model opportunity cost if you already earn well. Two years of fees plus two years of forgone salary is the real economic bet. A fresher and a mid-career professional face different payback clocks even if both land near the cited ₹31 LPA median. Run the ROI calculator with your actual pre-MBA cash.

Versus higher-fee peers, the gap is the story. Ahmedabad’s published PGP fee is ₹27.50 lakh; Bangalore’s domestic PGP is ₹26.00 lakh plus mess and caution. A ₹5 to ₹7 lakh fee gap versus those campuses is material for many households even when median CTCs at A/B sit a few lakhs higher. Stress-test repayment at 20% below median fixed cash.

Summers, PPOs, and function reality

Summer internships feed PPO paths at Lucknow the same way they do across old IIMs. Open the latest summer and final reports on mba-sm-reports before you wire a deposit, and separate CTC from fixed cash.

Consulting, banking and NBFC roles, conglomerate general management, and FMCG sales and marketing are the pathways converters cite most often. FMCG and marketing have been a durable Lucknow strength area for many batches; still read the current sector table rather than older alumni lore alone. If your only goal is product management in Bengaluru, prefer Bangalore when you hold both calls. If markets or IB culture is your single thesis, weigh Calcutta carefully before defaulting to L on fee alone.

When a newer placement PDF publishes after our 2023-25 cycle stamp, re-open the institute reports page. Do not replace cited medians with a friend’s screenshot.

Admissions and cutoffs

IIM Lucknow runs a standalone admissions process for PGP and related programmes. You write CAT, meet category-wise shortlist thresholds published for that year, then face written ability and personal interview stages as defined in the current policy. There is no CAP shared PI for Lucknow.

What changes yearly. Shortlist percentiles, sectional requirements, and composite weight grids move. A 99.4%ile that cleared two years ago is not a plan for this cycle. Download the policy PDF that matches your CAT year from iiml.ac.in.

Interview reality. Expect work-experience depth, academic honesty checks, and motivation for Lucknow specifically. “BLACKI or nothing” without a Lucknow reason converts poorly. PGP-ABM aspirants must show genuine agribusiness or rural-economy interest when that is their track; a fake ABM story is obvious.

Batch mix. Engineers still dominate numerically. Consulting, finance, and marketing aspirants coexist. Peer quality is high, a notch less mythologized than A/B in some recruiter hearsay, which can be an advantage if you want less performative competition and a disadvantage if you thrive on extreme peer pressure.

Placements

Metric lensGuidance
Where to lookPlacement reports index and related IIML report pages
2023-25 cycle (cited)Average ~₹32.3 LPA CTC; median ~₹31 LPA CTC
DefinitionTreat as CTC unless the PDF defines fixed cash separately
Function mixConsulting, finance, sales and marketing, general management, operations, product-adjacent roles

How to read the report. Open the latest final placement PDF. Find median and average. Separate domestic and international if both appear. Note highest packages as outliers, not planning inputs. Read role-wise or sector-wise tables. Ask whether figures are CTC, maximum earning potential, or fixed cash. Lucknow historically communicates in CTC language more often than Ahmedabad’s IPRS-MEP framing, so do not compare L’s CTC median to A’s MEP median without adjustment.

Sector story. Consulting and finance remain important. FMCG and sales and marketing strength is a durable Lucknow reputation item for many batches. Conglomerate leadership programmes and operations roles round out the book. Large offer volumes from advisory firms can dominate headlines in some years; volume is not the same as your personal fit.

Process risk. Soft consulting years push more candidates into marketing, operations, or analytics. That is survivable if your CV is flexible. It is painful if you only prepared for one firm type.

Editorial placements: 4.6 / 5. Strong old-IIM outcomes with transparent institute report culture. Residual gap to a perfect five is definition caution (CTC versus fixed) and brand strength a step below A/B for the scarcest MBB and IB seats.

Academics and campus

Lucknow’s main campus is residential with a full PGP core and second-year electives across functional areas. Pedagogy mixes cases, projects, and exams. Academic load is serious; this is not a leisure MBA.

PGP-ABM and other programmes. Agribusiness management and other offerings matter for specific career goals. Read the correct brochure. Do not assume every placement table mixes programmes identically.

Noida and location notes. Institute presence beyond the main Lucknow campus may matter for certain executive or satellite activities; for flagship PGP residential life, plan on Lucknow. The city offers lower living costs than Bengaluru for many lifestyles, with less spontaneous product-ecosystem density.

Campus life: 4.1 / 5. Strong residential community, active clubs, and intensity. Drag comes from non-metro lifestyle limits for students who need weekly big-city energy.

Academics: 4.4 / 5. Solid old-IIM rigor without the absolute mythos of Ahmedabad’s case culture in popular narrative.

How we compare it

Versus Ahmedabad. Prefer A for #1 brand and IPRS-audited mid-₹30s MEP. Prefer L when ₹6 to ₹7 lakh of fee savings and strong CTC medians beat A’s premium for your household.

Versus Bangalore. Prefer B for product and Bengaluru geography. Prefer L for fee efficiency when you are function-flexible across consulting, marketing, and finance.

Versus Calcutta. NIRF 2025 ranked L above C (#5 vs #7). That does not make L universally better. Prefer C for classic finance culture and Triple Crown signaling. Prefer L for fee and for applicants who overweight 2025 how the rank looks.

Versus Kozhikode. Prefer K for campus experience and #3 NIRF. Prefer L for fee vs median payback when both calls are in hand. Full side-by-side comparison: Lucknow vs Kozhikode.

Versus Indore. Prefer L for slightly stronger brand and 2025 NIRF rank. Prefer I for IPM pathway relevance or if Indore’s cohort and culture fit you better.

The tradeoffs

Brand perception risk. Some relatives and peers treat L as “not A/B.” If that narrative will poison your two years, either reframe now or choose differently.

Location risk. Lucknow is not a default product hub. Interview travel to metros adds cost and calendar friction.

Definition risk. CTC headlines overstate take-home if variable and benefits are large.

Opportunity-cost risk. Two years out of work still matter if you already earn well. Model forgone salary, not only fees.

ABM confusion risk. Applying to PGP-ABM without fit wastes a call and a year of prep narrative.

Batch competition risk. Old-IIM peer sets remain intense. Fee advantage does not mean soft academics.

Before you accept or decline

Before you accept

  • Download the fee PDF for your batch and list excluded mess and living lines
  • Open the latest final placement PDF and write median, average, and your target function’s typical range
  • Build a post-tax loan amortization with a conservative fixed-cash assumption
  • Speak to two alumni from the last three batches in your target function
  • Decide explicitly whether declining A/B (if you hold those) is about fit or about ego

Before you decline

  • Quantify the fee gap versus A/B after living costs
  • Check whether your decline reason is metro lifestyle, brand hearsay, or true function mismatch
  • If you hold Kozhikode too, write a one-page campus-versus-fee memo

Skip signals for you

  • You need A/B branding for identity
  • You refuse primary PDFs
  • You need Bengaluru immersion weekly

How we scored Lucknow

Placements 4.6: mid-₹30 LPA CTC outcomes with diversified functions and institute report availability. Fees and ROI 4.6: the clearest relative fee advantage among the strongest old IIMs when the ₹20.75 lakh circular holds. Academics 4.4: rigorous without A-level mythology. Campus life 4.1: residential strength, non-metro limits. Peer quality 4.5: high CAT bars, serious sections. Brand 4.5: durable BLACKI signal, a step below A/B for some elite desks.

If you hold L and K, ask whether you will use Kozhikode’s campus joy enough to justify a higher fee and slightly lower headline medians in the 2025 IIMK report. If you hold L and I, ask whether Indore’s IPM-adjacent culture and large cohort dynamics help or hurt your learning style. If you hold L and C, ask whether finance identity beats fee savings.

Students who do well at Lucknow usually treat the fee advantage as responsibility, not relaxation. They prepare summers early, keep CV stories tight, and use alumni without entitlement. Students who struggle often arrive bitter about missing A/B and under-invest in the process in front of them. The campus cannot cure that mindset.

Living costs in Lucknow are typically friendlier than Bengaluru for equivalent lifestyles. That advantage funds mock interviews, flights to processes, and emergency buffers. Spend it there, not on status consumption that mimics metro MBA hearsay.

Finally, stamp your personal decision memo with September 2026 data and a calendar reminder to re-check the fee PDF the week you accept. Circulars move. Our review is editorial judgment on evidence, not a contract with the institute.

Applicant scenario 1

Scenario planning beats rank worship. Write three columns: target role in year one, city preference for years one to five, and maximum all-in MBA cost your household can carry without distress. Map Lucknow against every other call you hold. The school that wins on two of three columns is usually correct. If Lucknow wins cost and role but loses city, decide whether city is truly non-negotiable or merely preferred. Many applicants discover that city preference was social media borrowed taste rather than a real constraint.

Parents sometimes push for the highest NIRF integer available on the call list. Show them Lucknow’s 2025 score of 77.97 beside Calcutta’s 77.34 and explain that both are top-tier national scores. Then show fee PDFs side by side. A calm evidence conversation beats a fight about prestige hearsay.

Frequently asked questions

Is IIM Lucknow worth it in 2026?

Yes for most converters who want old-IIM outcomes with stronger fee discipline than A/B. Our recommend/shortlist stance is intentional.

What is the PGP fee for 2025-27?

About ₹20.75 lakh aggregate on the commonly cited institute fee PDF; confirm footnotes and your batch circular.

What were recent placement averages?

For the 2023-25 finals cycle, cited figures near ₹32.3 LPA average and ₹31 LPA median CTC. Verify in the latest PDF on mba-sm-reports.

Is Lucknow better than Calcutta because NIRF says #5 vs #7?

Not automatically. Rankings are one input. Sector fit, alumni maps, and your calls matter more.

Does Lucknow participate in CAP?

No. It is standalone BLACKI admissions.

Is Lucknow good for consulting?

Yes as a serious pathway, with the caveat that the absolute densest MBB pipelines still skew toward A/B in many years.

What about FMCG and marketing?

Historically a Lucknow strength area for many batches. Still read the current sector table.

Should I prefer Bangalore for product?

Usually yes if product in Bengaluru is your single goal and you hold both calls.

How should I treat CTC vs fixed cash?

Assume CTC is not full take-home until the PDF proves otherwise. Model fixed cash for loan math.

Who should skip Lucknow?

Metro-only lifestyle seekers and applicants who will be unhappy anywhere but A/B.

How did you get to 4.5 overall?

Placements and ROI pull up; brand and campus life sit slightly below the top-two ceiling.

Where do I verify numbers?
What is the real all-in cost beyond ₹20.75 lakh?

Add mess, deposits, travel, and placement clothing from the fee PDF footnotes, then a living buffer. Confirm inclusions versus Bangalore or Ahmedabad before you treat a ₹5 to ₹7 lakh sticker gap as fully pocketed savings.

Do freshers get good outcomes at Lucknow?

Yes. Freshers convert and place every year. You lean harder on academics, interview clarity, and summer performance. Work-ex helps some consulting and finance narratives; it does not replace converting WAT and PI.

Are need-based scholarships real at IIML?

Yes, need-based aid and scholarships appear on institute pages in most cycles. Amounts and eligibility change. Verify the current notice; do not assume aid will wipe the full fee.

How does Lucknow compare to Ahmedabad on fee versus brand?

Lucknow usually wins absolute fee math; Ahmedabad usually wins pan-India brand pull. If ₹5 to ₹7 lakh of savings plus solid old-IIM outcomes beat the A premium for your household, L is a rational accept. If brand is the non-negotiable, keep A.

Is IIM Lucknow good for FMCG marketing?

Yes as a durable pathway for many batches. Still open the current sector table on mba-sm-reports and be honest about seat scarcity at the most selective brand roles.
