Who this process is for

If you’re deciding whether to prioritise this campus after CAT, here’s what matters. IIM Lucknow is a BLACKI campus with a standalone selection process. It is not CAP. This guide is for candidates aiming at Lucknow’s flagship MBA, and for those comparing MBA against Lucknow’s MBA-ABM and MBA-SM pathways, which share a policy document but use different floors and weights. Entry is through CAT, then WAT-PI, then a published final scorecard.

Primary sources: IIML Admission Policy Batch 2026-2028 PDF (also mirrored under iiml upload paths) and the programme overview on iiml.ac.in. Context: IIM Lucknow review and selection criteria explained. Data stamped September 2026.

How the process works

Lucknow’s 2026-28 (CAT 2025) policy splits shortlisting and final selection cleanly.

  1. Eligibility and programme choice. Standard CAT eligibility applies. MBA-SM additionally requires minimum 24 months work experience. Candidates interested in MBA-ABM or MBA-SM must submit the special programme form by the deadline, or they are dropped from those WAT-PI pools.
  2. Stage 1a: CAT floors. Category-wise sectional and total percentile minima differ by programme. For General category MBA, the published cutoffs are VARC 85, DILR 85, QA 85, total 90. MBA-ABM and MBA-SM General floors are lower on paper (total 85 with sectionals at 80). EWS/NC-OBC, SC, ST, and PwD rows are listed in Table 1 of the policy PDF.
  3. Stage 1b: Shortlist composite. Survivors are scored out of 100. For MBA, weights are scaled CAT 60, Class 12 10, graduation 10, work experience 10, academic diversity 5, gender diversity 5. MBA-ABM uses the same CAT/academics skeleton but sets work experience to 0 and expands academic diversity for listed agriculture and life-science disciplines (up to 20 in the diversity block, with a combined diversity cap noted in the PDF). MBA-SM keeps work-ex scoring with a 24-month baseline.
  4. WAT-PI scheduling. Composite scores and shortlists appear on iiml.ac.in. Shortlisted candidates must submit the WAT-PI form online on time or lose the interview slot.
  5. Stage 2: Final selection. For MBA and MBA-SM: CAT 30, academics (12th + graduation) 5+5, diversity 5, work experience 5, WAT 10, PI 40. For MBA-ABM: CAT 35, academics 5+5, diversity 5, work experience NA, WAT 10, PI 40. Candidates need at least 12 out of 40 in PI to stay on the merit list.

WAT-PI has historically been conducted in cities such as Bangalore, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Hyderabad (confirm the year’s call letter). Noida-linked or other Lucknow offerings can have separate notes. Do not assume one PDF covers every programme brand under the Lucknow umbrella.

Profile implications

CAT-heavy profiles. MBA shortlist is CAT-majority (60). Final stage still keeps CAT at 30. Balanced sectionals are mandatory because Stage 1a uses three sectional floors plus overall. General MBA’s 90 overall with 85 sectionals is a high bar relative to several peer BLACKI first filters. Train section balance with the CAT exam guide.

Academics-heavy profiles. Class 12 and graduation contribute 20 shortlist points and 10 final points. Graduation is normalised within academic discipline. Weak graduation percentiles in your discipline hurt even when CAT is strong.

Work-experience profiles. MBA awards up to 10 shortlist points for months beyond six (formula in Table 2) and 5 final points. MBA-SM requires 24 months just to be eligible and scores experience above that baseline. MBA-ABM shortlist sets work-ex weight to zero. Pick the programme that matches your profile math, not only the brand name.

Diversity. Non-engineering bachelor’s degrees earn academic diversity points for MBA/MBA-SM. Female candidates earn gender diversity points. ABM expands academic diversity for listed agriculture and related disciplines. Read Table 3 before assuming you qualify.

Interview day. PI at 40 with a hard pass mark means a weak interview ends the process regardless of CAT. WAT at 10 is enough to separate tight profiles. Prep with WAT-PI guide.

How Lucknow differs from Kozhikode and Indore

Versus IIM Kozhikode, Kozhikode uses a three-stage flow with a mandatory Stage 1 registration email step, General CAT floors of overall 85 / sectional 75, plus Class X/XII percentage minima, then an Aggregate Index Score with CAT 50%, X 15%, XII 20%, diversity, and work-ex (PGP Admissions Policy 2026-28 PDF). Final weights at Kozhikode are CAT 35%, PI 35%, WAT 20%, resume 10%. Lucknow is more CAT-heavy at shortlist for MBA (60) and more PI-heavy at finish (40 vs 35), while Kozhikode puts unusual weight on WAT (20%). See IIM Kozhikode selection criteria.

Versus IIM Indore, Indore’s PGP 2026-28 procedure uses General/EWS overall 90 with sectionals at 80, a shortlist composite that is CAT-heavy with large Class 12 weight (25), and a final composite where PI is 45 (Indore PGP admission procedure PDF). Lucknow’s General MBA floor (90 overall with 85 sectionals) is stricter on section balance. Indore also runs a separate IPM path via IPMAT that must never be mixed with PGP cutoffs. See IIM Indore selection criteria.

Programme choice without mixing the math

If you are torn between MBA, MBA-ABM, and MBA-SM, decide on career fit before you chase the “easier” floor. ABM’s academic-diversity expansion helps candidates from listed agriculture and life-science disciplines, but it is still a Lucknow MBA-family process with its own final weights and no work-ex final points. SM is built for candidates who already have substantial work experience. Flagship MBA remains the default general-management target for most CAT aspirants in our counselling set.

After CAT results, watch iiml.ac.in for Stage 1b composite cutoffs and the WAT-PI form link. Submit the form even if you feel borderline. Missing the form is an unforced error. For interview prep, treat Lucknow panels as testing academic honesty and goal clarity under time pressure. Bring documents that match the work-ex months you claimed as of the policy as-of date. When offers arrive, compare Lucknow against peers using primary placement reports and our IIM Lucknow review, not meme CTC screenshots.

Common mistakes

  1. Applying MBA floors to ABM or SM, or the reverse.
  2. Skipping the special ABM/SM form and wondering why there is no call.
  3. Treating Stage 1a percentiles as the call cutoff.
  4. Inflating work-ex months beyond what payslips and letters support.
  5. Ignoring the 12/40 PI pass rule.
  6. Mixing Noida or other programme notices with the flagship MBA policy.
  7. Forgetting that PI failure removes you from the merit list even with a strong CAT.
  8. Applying CAP waitlist hearsay to Lucknow movement.

Frequently asked questions

Is IIM Lucknow part of CAP?

No. Lucknow runs its own WAT-PI. Read CAP for IIMs explained.

Which PDF is authoritative?

The Admission Policy Batch 2026-2028 PDF on iiml.ac.in for that cycle, plus any superseding notice the institute posts. Prefer the PDF over coaching blogs.

Can we get into MBA-SM without work experience?

Not under the 2026-28 policy’s stated eligibility. MBA-SM requires minimum 24 months experience in addition to CAT-linked criteria.

How should freshers read the MBA shortlist weights?

You can still score high on CAT (60) and academics (20) plus diversity. Work-ex points will be low or zero. Your path is CAT balance and interview quality.

What should we read next on iimHQ?
Do sectional cutoffs still matter if my overall percentile is high?

Yes at many campuses. Overall strength cannot paper over a failed sectional floor when the year’s PDF requires both. Confirm overall and sectional rows for your category in the live policy note.

Data stamped September 2026. Re-check the live IIML policy before you lock programme preferences for the next CAT cycle.

What is the difference between qualifying, call, and convert?

Qualifying floors let you stay eligible. A call/shortlist means you enter WAT/AWT and PI. Convert means the final composite produced an offer. Mixing the three layers is how percentile screenshots mislead. See cutoffs explained.

What changes in selection criteria every year?

If you’re deciding whether to prioritise IIM Lucknow after CAT, here’s what matters. Composite weights, application-rating tables, diversity points, and published floors can all move. Never reuse last year’s spreadsheet without opening this year’s institute or CAP PDF.
