Inputs and outputs

Most MBA “ROI” posts paste average CTC screenshots. This tool models the blunt ratio finance conversations actually start with: fee burden versus a conservative first-year earnings centre. Use it when you are shortlisting campuses or checking an education-loan limit. Still read the placement PDF before you borrow.

Input / output In this calculator? Where to get the number
Programme / tuition fee (₹ lakh) Yes Batch circular linked in each review
Hostel, mess, caution, other charges, living buffer Optional toggles Fee PDF footnotes; living buffer is a planning band, not an institute quote
Median / typical first-year earnings (₹ LPA) Yes Audited placement report; prefer median over average
Simple payback years (fee ÷ earnings) Yes Calculated here; also stamped as editorial paybackYears on reviews
Tax, rent, EMI interest No Your personal cashflow model
MEP vs CTC label check No (manual) MEP glossary + report footnotes
Scholarships / net fee No Only after an award is confirmed in writing

Deposits, mess, and living costs are why two campuses with the same headline fee can diverge by several lakh in year-one cash. Read the fee companion guides after you run the ratio.

How to compare campuses on one formula

  1. Lock units. Fee in ₹ lakh, earnings in ₹ LPA. Do not mix crore and LPA in one pass.
  2. Pick one earnings definition per comparison row: median MEP, median CTC, or fixed cash. Label the cell; never blend MEP and CTC.
  3. Run the calculator for each campus with those two inputs. Record the years figure.
  4. Haircut the optimistic case. Re-run at 20% below the median centre before you celebrate sub-one-year payback.
  5. Open the review and compare tool for disclosure quality, role mix, and dimension scores; payback alone is not a shortlist.

At a ₹5 lakh fee gap, the payback story only improves if earnings hold up. That is why identical math across campuses beats reading twenty Instagram infographics. After you narrow the field, use Compare IIMs and the written best IIMs for ROI essay.

Worked example: IIM Ahmedabad

Defaults above use Ahmedabad’s published PGP 2025-27 programme fee of ₹27.50 lakh and Class of 2025 median MEP ₹34.59 LPA from our Ahmedabad review. Simple fee ÷ median MEP is under one year of pre-tax earning potential:

  • Programme fee: ₹27.50 lakh
  • Median MEP: ₹34.59 LPA
  • Calculator output: ≈ 0.8 years (27.50 ÷ 34.59)
  • Editorial paybackYears on the review: 1.2 (debt + post-tax conservatism)

The gap between 0.8 and 1.2 is the point of this page. The calculator shows the raw ratio; our review score folds in financing reality. Taxes, variable pay that does not fully land, and city living costs stretch real clearance. Full fee context: Ahmedabad fees guide. Placement reading method: how to read IIM placement reports.

Why simple payback can mislead

On paper, many IIMs cluster near one year of fee vs median payback. Definition quality and downside risk separate them. Illustrative anchors from our Sep 2026 review sheet (verify every PDF yourself):

Campus Fee anchor Outcome centre Simple ratio Editorial payback
Lucknow ₹20.75 lakh ₹31 LPA median CTC ≈ 0.7 ~0.7
Bangalore ₹26.00 lakh ₹34.75 LPA ≈ 0.7 ~0.9
Ahmedabad ₹27.50 lakh ₹34.59 LPA MEP ≈ 0.8 ~1.2
Raipur ₹18.00 lakh ₹18.40 LPA CTC ≈ 1.0 ~1.0
Shillong ≈₹26.18 lakh ₹26.00 LPA CTC ≈ 1.0 ~1.0

Lucknow’s stronger simple ratio does not automatically beat Ahmedabad on option value or recruiter density. Shillong’s near-parity fee and median is a different risk profile than a baby IIM with mid-teen medians against a ₹20 lakh+ fee. Full sheet: annual fee and payback sheet.

Out of scope here

Included: programme fee numerator, a single annual earnings denominator, and the resulting years figure. That is the line item most “ROI ranking” threads bury under highest-CTC graphics.

Not included: income tax, PF, city rent, mess and hostel deltas, education-loan interest, moratorium EMI spikes, opportunity cost of your current salary, joining-bonus cliffs, ESOP marks inside CTC, or scholarship netting. A two-year loan at typical education rates can add meaningful rupees on top of a sub-one-year headline ratio. Treat the output as a planning floor, then build a one-page cash model.

Before offer week

Use the calculator to kill impossible fee/earnings pairs before you fall in love with a brand. If a campus is already above your debt ceiling on a below-median run here, waitlist optimism rarely fixes the math.

What to validate before you wire fees

  • Run three scenarios: median centre, −20%, and −30%. Do not approve borrowing on a single point estimate.
  • Re-download PDFs the week you pay. Circulars and placement pages move between shortlist and acceptance season.
  • Match definitions. If one offer is MEP and another is CTC, haircut before comparing years.
  • Price the city. Bengaluru or Mumbai living can erase a 0.2-year calculator edge.
  • Confirm scholarships in writing before you lower the fee numerator.
  • Write the decision down: campus, fee total, median definition, EMI at −20%, and why this campus.

Quick rule of thumb

Cap total borrowing at an EMI you can service on a below-median outcome. Prefer two institutes with transparent disclosures over five opaque ones. Brand can still win when option value matters, but say so explicitly instead of pretending the calculator blessed it. Offer-week checklist: accept or decline. Scoring context: methodology.

Frequently asked questions

Is this MBA fee payback calculator free?

Yes. Pick a campus to prefill programme fee and median earnings from our reviews, toggle hostel/mess/caution add-ons, and run payback with no signup. Figures are directional planning numbers, not a loan quote or financial advice.

How do I calculate IIM fee payback years?

Payback years ≈ all-in fee (₹ lakh) ÷ conservative annual cash earnings (₹ LPA). Prefill from the campus dropdown, then toggle extras that sit outside the sticker. Prefer median over average, keep MEP versus CTC labels consistent, and haircut for tax and loan interest before you decide.

Should I use median CTC, average CTC, or MEP?

Prefer median when disclosed. Use MEP only when the institute defines it that way (for example IIM Ahmedabad). Do not mix MEP and CTC in one comparison. If you only have average CTC, treat it as optimistic and model a below-median case.

Why can a lower-fee IIM still look worse on payback?

If median earnings fall roughly in line with the fee cut, simple payback stays near one year. Definition quality, batch risk, and city costs matter more than sticker fee alone. Run the same inputs across campuses, then read the review for disclosure quality.

Does this calculator include education-loan interest?

No. It divides fee by annual earnings only. Interest, EMI, moratorium rules, tax, rent, and opportunity cost of your pre-MBA salary are excluded, though you can toggle a living buffer. Treat the output as a floor, then check EMI on a below-median outcome.

Can I compare every IIM with the same formula?

Yes for a first pass: switch the campus dropdown, keep the same toggle logic, and compare all-in years. Then open each campus review and fee companion to verify the latest circular and placement PDF. Side-by-side scores live in the Compare IIMs tool.
