Our verdict

We shortlist IIM Guwahati only situationally when Assam or Northeast location, IIM Ahmedabad mentorship design, and a small founding cohort are genuine preferences, and you accept unknown placement outcomes. Prefer Shillong when you need published mid-₹26 LPA CTC centres at a Northeast campus. Prefer Jammu or Bodh Gaya when you need any published baby-IIM median before you pay. Skip if your accept decision needs an audited median, a recruiter mix table, or a published NIRF rank.

IIM Guwahati is the newest public IIM in the system: the 22nd institute, established in the 2025 legislative and Cabinet wave, with academic inauguration cited for 14 February 2026 and the first MBA batch (2026-28) inaugurated on 21 July 2026. Our editorial overall of 3.0 / 5 is deliberately conservative. Fee transparency is good. Placement transparency is not. Mentorship by IIM Ahmedabad is a real design signal for curriculum and early governance. It is not a guarantee that first-batch cash outcomes will resemble Ahmedabad, Shillong, or even mid-band baby IIMs.

There is no NIRF Management 2025 rank for Guwahati because the institute was not an eligible ranking participant in that cycle. Treat any third-party package screenshots as noise until iimg.ac.in publishes a careers process and, later, an audited report.

Who this is for

Best for

  • Applicants who accept founding-batch placement uncertainty for Northeast location, IIM Ahmedabad mentorship design, and a small 2026-28 cohort.
  • Candidates whose family, dual-career, language, or industry plans make Guwahati / Assam a practical base rather than a compromise story.
  • Profiles that cleared Guwahati’s standalone CAT-plus-composite process and hold weaker or no audited-baby alternatives that year.
  • Students who will treat summer search as a full job search from Term 1 because the careers office is still being built.
  • Applicants who value early proximity to faculty and peers in a planned ~70-seat batch more than a large alumni directory.

Concrete profile examples

  • Fresher engineer open to BFSI, IT services, sales, operations, or public-systems adjacent roles who will model EMI without assuming a median.
  • Professional with 1 to 4 years of experience who wants the IIM credential and can survive two years on a transit campus near Guwahati airport.
  • Candidate comparing Guwahati against CAP baby offers who prefers Assam logistics and IIMA-mentored pedagogy over a slightly older baby with a thin PDF.
  • Northeast-rooted applicant who would otherwise default to IIM Shillong solely on geography and wants a second regional option with a lower fee sticker.

Best not for

  • Anyone who needs an audited median CTC, NIRF rank, or multi-year recruiter base rate before paying a deposit.
  • People modelling EMI on aggregator “average package” ranges that do not appear on iimg.ac.in.
  • Candidates who will only work in two metro postal codes and will not travel for summers or finals.
  • Applicants chasing BLACKI consulting hearsay through a brand-new logo.
  • Students who resent process ambiguity: waitlists, transit facilities, and evolving elective menus are features of Year Zero campuses.

Founding-batch reality. The first MBA cohort is small. Reporting so far points to a planned intake of 70 and an inaugurated batch of 52 students from 18 states. Small batches raise individual visibility with recruiters and raise variance: one strong season or one weak season moves the narrative hard.

Campus character. Transit life at Tech City, Bongora is airport-proximate and still formative. Permanent campus plans at Marabhita near Palasbari are multi-year. If you need finished stadiums and decade-old clubs on Day 1, this is the wrong shortlist.

Fee competitiveness. ₹18.00 lakh for 2026-28 (tuition and hostel; about ₹19.23 lakh with mess advance and caution) is fee-disciplined versus several baby and new IIMs. That helps only if outcomes clear a survivable band. Without a median, fee discipline is necessary and not sufficient.

How we scored this

Our scores are editorial judgments informed by primary public evidence. For this review We weighed placements and outcomes most heavily, then fees and ROI, academics, peer quality, campus life, and brand. Guwahati forces an honesty test: when placements evidence is absent, placement and ROI scores must fall even if the fee page is clean and the mentor brand is strong.

When institute PDFs disagree with secondary blogs, We keep the institute PDF. When the institute has not published a placement PDF at all, We refuse invented packages. Aggregator pages listing ₹14-17 LPA averages or ₹30-35 LPA highs for Guwahati are not primary sources. We ignore them for scoring.

We also separate marketing language from decision inputs. Mentorship by IIM Ahmedabad describes academic design and early institutional support. It does not transfer Ahmedabad’s placement tables. “22nd IIM” describes legal and system status. It does not create a recruiter calendar by itself.

Career planning without a placement report

Students who do well from founding campuses usually share habits that have little to do with nostalgia for older IIMs:

  1. They pick a primary function by Term 2 and build proof through projects, competitions, and cold outreach instead of waiting for a placement brochure.
  2. They treat summer internship search like a job search with weekly metrics for applications, calls, and mocks.
  3. They stay flexible on city for the first role, then focus on geography after they have a stronger resume line.
  4. They learn enough finance and spreadsheet hygiene to survive BFSI and operations interviews even if they prefer marketing narratives.
  5. They keep a written offer comparison sheet so family pressure cannot replace arithmetic on fee, risk, and location.

Students who struggle often share the opposite habits: late specialisation, metro-only filters, over-reliance on mentor-institute hearsay, avoidance of PI and case practice, and outsourcing agency to a careers cell that has not finished hiring its own processes.

If you are a fresher, your first job is building proof of work. If you are experienced, your first job is translating domain expertise into MBA-interview stories that a generalist recruiter can understand in three minutes. Both groups should maintain a backup sector because founding-batch recruiter mixes are unknown until they exist.

What situational shortlist means here

Situational shortlist means your alternative set, location constraints, fee tolerance, and risk appetite decide the call. We are not issuing a blanket recommend for a campus without placement tables. Two candidates with the same CAT percentile can rationally accept and decline Guwahati.

If you hold only this IIM call and non-IIM alternatives are weak on mobility, accepting can be rational if your cash buffer survives a soft founding season. If you hold Shillong or a baby IIM with audited mid-teen medians, Guwahati becomes a location hedge rather than a first choice. If you hold several baby IIMs, rank Guwahati below any peer with a downloadable audited report unless Assam is non-negotiable.

Practical timeline if you are holding an offer

Week 0: download the fee schedule from the academics page, the admission process PDF or page, and any hostel or registration circulars. Week 1: build EMI plus living model without a median; stress-test with conservative fixed-cash assumptions in the low-teen band and a downside case below that. Week 1 continued: compare parallel offers in one sheet covering fee, evidence quality, location, sector fit, and gut check. Week 2: decide, then pay only when the sheet still prefers this campus after a night of sleep. After accept: start CV and summer outreach early; do not wait for a careers page that says details will appear “in due time.”

Also calendar scholarship deadlines, loan document collection, and resignation notice periods if you are working. Liquidity surprises in Term 1 create avoidable stress that shows up later in interview performance.

Myths worth ignoring

Myth: IIMA mentorship equals IIMA packages. Reality: mentorship shapes curriculum and early systems; packages follow recruiter behaviour and batch execution. Myth: all baby IIMs are identical. Reality: Guwahati is younger than the 2015-16 baby set and lacks their multi-year PDFs. Myth: highest CTC screenshots on Telegram prove batch quality. Reality: Guwahati has not published CTC tables, so screenshots are noise. Myth: declining Guwahati for a private B-school is always foolish. Reality: a funded specialised role can beat founding-batch uncertainty. Myth: accepting any IIM guarantees consulting. Reality: function outcomes follow skills and demand. Myth: a permanent campus render equals academic depth. Reality: elective execution and peer effort matter more than drone shots of Marabhita.

What moves outcomes on campus

Form a study group in the first month with people who will tell you the truth about case prep quality. Volunteer for live projects that create recruiter-facing artifacts. Record your mock interviews. Keep a failure log for summers so you iterate instead of spiraling. If quantitative cores scare you, schedule deliberate practice early rather than hoping the curve saves you. If you are quantitatively strong but weak in communication, join debating or presentation clubs with the same seriousness you give Excel.

The IIM logo will open some doors. It will not finish interviews for you. The students who understand that early usually occupy better outcomes without needing luck narratives.

Finally, keep your ethics intact. Do not fabricate work ex, do not ghost recruiters, and do not treat batchmates as enemies in a zero-sum game. Reputation travels fast inside small founding cohorts, and it follows you into the first job search after graduation.

Fees and ROI

ItemFigureSource
Programme fee planning figure₹18.00 lakh (MBA 2026-28; tuition + hostel; mess advance ₹1.08 lakh and caution ₹15,000 extra; term totals ₹19.23 lakh)Academics fee table
Median CTC planning figureNot published; careers and placements page states framework is still being builtAcademics / Careers & Placements
Average CTC planning figureNot published; no audited placement report for the founding MBA batch yetSame

What the fee covers. The academics page text says the ₹18 lakh figure for 2026-28 covers tuition, accommodation, and mess advances, but its own term table shows otherwise. The ₹18.00 lakh is ₹50,000 registration, ₹16.02 lakh tuition, and ₹1.48 lakh hostel and facility charges. The mess advance of ₹18,000 a term (₹1.08 lakh over six terms) and the ₹15,000 refundable caution sit on top, so the term totals sum to ₹19.23 lakh. Budget ₹19.23 lakh and use the term table for cash-flow planning.

Payback sketch. Without a published median, We do not invent a paybackYears figure. If you force a planning exercise, run three scenarios: optimistic mid-teen fixed cash, base low-teen fixed cash, and a soft season below that. Fee divided by a hypothetical ₹12 LPA fixed cash is about 1.5 years before tax, interest, and living costs. That is a stress tool, not a forecast.

Hidden costs. Travel to metro SIPs, case competition trips, interview clothing, laptop upgrades, and family visits to Assam rarely sit inside the headline fee. Build a 24-month cash plan, not only an EMI schedule.

Loans and scholarships. Education loans are commonly available for IIMs, subject to bank norms and co-applicant strength. Do not assume a waiver in your accept decision without written confirmation. Banks may ask harder questions when placement history is thin; prepare documents early.

How we think about ROI here. Year-one cash matters, but so does switching into a better function and the long-run value of an IIM credential. If you already earn near a plausible post-MBA fixed band and lack a switch story, pause. If you are stuck in a low-mobility role and Assam location is a feature, option value can still justify founding-batch risk. Revisit numbers the moment summers land, because summers will be the first hard signal Guwahati produces.

Use the ROI calculator only after locking primary documents, and treat Guwahati outputs as scenario analysis until a median exists.

All-in cost and who should skip

₹18.00 lakh for MBA 2026-28 covers registration, tuition, and hostel; the ₹1.08 lakh mess advance and ₹15,000 caution are extra, for ₹19.23 lakh across the term table (academics fee table).

Budget founding-batch uncertainty. Without a placement report, your downside case is harder to stress-test. Keep a larger contingency for living and for a weaker first-job outcome than IIMA mentorship marketing implies.

Scholarships and loans. Read current notices. Lenders may ask more questions for a founding batch; start paperwork early.

Opportunity cost. Two years of forgone salary plus ₹18 lakh is a large bet when median CTC is unpublished. Freshers and high earners should run different clocks.

Who should skip. Skip if you need audited medians before paying, if you will treat IIMA mentorship as a CTC transfer, or if Northeast location is a household veto.

Admissions and cutoffs

IIM Guwahati ran a standalone process for MBA 2026-28. It is not a CAP campus for that cycle. Confirm every future year on the institute site because new IIMs can change process design.

Stages (2026-28 policy as published)

  1. Stage 0: basic academic eligibility (bachelor’s with 50% / 45% for SC/ST/PwD as stated).
  2. Stage 1: CAT 2025 overall and sectional cut-offs plus positive raw scores in all sections.
  3. Application confirmation for candidates who clear Stage 0 and Stage 1.
  4. Stage 2: final selection on Composite Score without a separate WAT/PI round in the published 2026-28 document.

CAT Stage-1 cut-offs (Non-PwD), CAT 2025

General, EWS8575

PwD cut-offs are lower; read Table I on the admission process page.

Composite Score. Published formula: CS = 0.65 × NCAT + 0.35 × NAR, where NAR aggregates Class 10, Class 12, bachelor’s, and work-experience rating tables. Work-ex scoring peaks in a mid-experience band and falls toward zero for very short and very long tenures as defined in Table 2D. Academics matter more here than on campuses that weight PI heavily.

No PI in the founding policy. That is unusual relative to CAP baby IIMs. It rewards CAT and academics cleanly. It also means soft skills are not filtered in admissions the way they are at PI-heavy campuses. Expect classrooms and careers processes to do more of that sorting later.

Batch size and seats. Planned batch size cited as 70 with category-wise reservation following Government of India norms. First-batch inauguration reporting cited 52 joined students. Seat movement and waitlists in June-July 2026 showed a filled cohort with limited further movement unless withdrawals appeared.

Age and document rules. Selected candidates must be 19 years of age as on 30 June 2026 per the published note. Final-year students face strict degree completion deadlines (including the 30 June 2026 / 31 December 2026 document trail in the policy). Read the admissions page if you are provisional.

Acceptance fee. Provisional offers required an online confirmation fee of ₹50,000 adjusted toward Term I. Withdrawal before registration follows the published ₹1,000 processing deduction rule; after registration, mid-term exits forfeit fees paid. Calendar refund rules before you juggle parallel deposits.

Yearly movement. Cut-offs, composite weights, and even the presence or absence of PI can move for later batches. Telegram hearsay expires quickly. Save the official policy page rather than screenshots of someone else’s scorecard.

PI advice if a future year adds interviews. Be ready for “why Guwahati” without arrogance toward newer institutes and without framing yourself only as a BLACKI reject. Show a sector plan that does not depend on imaginary medians. Carry one crisp story about leadership, failure, and quant impact.

Placements

Open the Academics page Careers & Placements section first. As of our September 2026 stamp, the institute states it is in a formative phase and is building a structured career services and placement framework. Details on process, recruiter engagement, and internships are promised “in due time.” That sentence is the entire primary placement disclosure.

Reading rules for a campus without a report

  • Do not borrow Shillong, Jammu, or Bodh Gaya medians as proxies and call them Guwahati data.
  • Do not treat IIMA mentorship as a CTC transfer function.
  • Prefer “unknown” over false precision in your EMI sheet.
  • When a report eventually appears, read median over average over highest, function mix over logo walls, and fixed cash versus CTC definitions.
  • Ask what counts as placed, whether deferred joining is included, and whether the denominator is eligible students or total intake.

What good execution looks like here. Early CV iteration, alumni outreach to other IIMs and Northeast networks, flexible geography, and relentless summer hunting. What poor execution looks like. Waiting for the careers office to finish writing its webpage, refusing Tier-2 roles on principle, and discovering in Term 4 that spreadsheet hygiene is not optional.

Sector base rates. Until Guwahati publishes its own mix, We refuse to invent one. Reasonable planning still assumes baby-IIM-like demand shapes over time: BFSI, IT services, sales and marketing, operations, and analytics services as common pathways, with elite strategy seats scarce everywhere outside the oldest brands. Plan a primary sector and a backup sector.

Location flexibility. Students open to rotational programmes, manufacturing belts, Northeast and East India HQs, and Tier-2 postings usually clear better matches than students who filter only Bengaluru and Mumbai.

Data gap flag. This is the largest gap on the page. Our placement score of 2.4 / 5 reflects missing evidence, not a claim that outcomes will be poor forever.

How to use the placement report

There is no audited placement report yet. Open the Academics Careers & Placements section and treat “framework still being built” as the primary disclosure.

Campus-specific reading tips for Guwahati

  • Do not borrow Shillong, Jammu, or Bodh Gaya medians as Guwahati data.
  • Do not treat IIMA mentorship as a package guarantee.
  • Prefer “unknown” over false precision in your EMI sheet.
  • When a report appears, lock median, definition, denominator, and sector mix before you update this decision retroactively for juniors.
  • Re-check iimg.ac.in immediately before any deposit; founding-year pages change quickly.

Academics and campus

Expect a two-year full-time residential MBA with Year 1 cores and Year 2 electives. Official curriculum language lists foundations across economics, accounting and finance, marketing, operations and supply chain, OB/HR, strategy, quantitative methods / analytics, and communication and leadership. Electives are described across finance, marketing, operations, HR/OB, strategy, general management, and emerging areas as offered.

Mentor design. IIM Ahmedabad is the mentor institute. Programme copy frames pedagogy as case discussions, conceptual sessions, simulations, team work, data-driven analysis, guest sessions, and projects connected to organisations and public systems. That is a serious design promise. Verify execution with current students after Term 1: which electives ran, which cancelled, how heavy the case load felt, and how fast feedback returned.

Peer effects. A founding batch near 50-70 seats can create tight peer bonds and thin elective demand. Experienced peers help if you join their project groups early. Fresher-heavy pockets need more self-driven differentiation.

Transit campus. Tech City, Bongora, Kamrup sits roughly a 10-minute drive from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport per institute copy. Published expectations include classrooms and seminar rooms, library and learning spaces, furnished hostel blocks with dining, Wi-Fi, basic sports and recreation, medical basics, and a secured campus setting. Treat “evolving” as literal: facilities scale with the student community.

Permanent campus. Planned at Marabhita near Palasbari in Kamrup district, with public reporting citing on the order of 76+ hectares and multi-year buildout funded within a broader ₹555 crore Cabinet sanction covering temporary campus, permanent campus, and early operations. Do not accept or decline based on a render of buildings that are still under development.

Life in Guwahati. Assam’s largest city gives more urban density than several baby hill or pilgrim-town campuses. Airport access is a practical advantage for summers and family travel. Climate, language mix, and distance from your preferred metro still need a temperament check. Dual-career households should map flight connectivity before accepting.

Health and pace. Two-year MBAs punish poor sleep and unmanaged stress. Founding campuses add administrative friction. Build routines early. Placement panic in Term 5 is harder to fix than habits started in Term 1.

How we compare it

Versus IIM Shillong. Prefer Shillong when you need audited high-teen-to-mid-20s placement evidence and will pay a higher fee for a mature Northeast new IIM. Prefer Guwahati when fee discipline near ₹18 lakh, Assam city logistics, and founding-batch intimacy matter more than PDF certainty.

Versus IIM Jammu. Prefer Jammu when you want NIRF #35 signalling and cited mid-teen medians despite a higher fee near ₹22.8 lakh. Prefer Guwahati when Assam location wins and you accept thinner outcome evidence.

Versus IIM Bodh Gaya. Prefer Bodh Gaya when NIRF #31 and an audited placement PDF matter for family and loan conversations. Prefer Guwahati when Northeast geography and IIMA mentorship design outweigh Bihar campus fit.

Versus IIM Sirmaur. Prefer Sirmaur when a Himalayan-foothills campus and a published (if softer) placement narrative beat Assam transit life. Prefer Guwahati when fee is lower on paper and Guwahati city access is a real lifestyle win.

Versus regional non-IIM options. Prefer Guwahati when the public IIM credential and long-term mobility matter more than staying inside a familiar private brand with clearer short-term packages.

Versus a funded job offer with clear progression. If the job already beats your downside post-MBA cash case and teaches your target skill, declining can be rational.

Versus repeating CAT. Repeating makes sense only with a credible score jump plan and emotional bandwidth. Blind repetition to chase an older logo often wastes a working year.

The tradeoffs

  • No audited placement report as of September 2026; outcome variance is personal until tables exist
  • No NIRF Management 2025 rank to use in family or loan debates
  • Transit campus life and permanent campus timelines create facility uncertainty
  • Alumni network is effectively empty for MBA graduates until the founding cohort exits
  • Standalone admissions without PI in 2026-28 filters differently than CAP campuses
  • Sector concentration risk cannot be measured yet because sector mix is unpublished
  • Mentorship signalling can inflate expectations beyond what first-batch recruiting supports
  • Opportunity cost hurts if you leave a compounding role for a soft founding season
  • Expectation inflation from BLACKI or Shillong screenshots produces resentment that no mentor can fix

Before you accept or decline

Accept only after

  • Saving the fee table and admissions policy for your cohort
  • Modelling EMI plus living costs for 24 months with explicit downside cases (no median assumed)
  • Naming two sectors and one backup city
  • Comparing all written offers in one sheet that scores evidence quality, not only sticker fees
  • Speaking with faculty, staff, or joined students if accessible about Term 1 realities
  • Confirming refund and registration rules on confirmation fees
  • Sleeping on the decision once without social media

Decline only after

  • Writing the real reason in one sentence
  • Checking you are not declining from ego while holding no better call
  • Calendaring every parallel deadline and refund rule
  • Confirming you are not rejecting Assam location for a fantasy metro filter you have never tested

Frequently asked questions

Is IIM Guwahati worth it in 2026?

Only when Northeast location and founding-batch design are genuine preferences and you accept unpublished outcomes. For most median-driven households, wait for careers data.

What is the fee reality at ₹18.00 lakh?

Tuition, registration, and hostel are inside. The mess advance (₹18,000 a term, ₹1.08 lakh in all) and ₹15,000 caution are extra, so budget ₹19.23 lakh. Still add personal living and travel, and keep contingency for unknown first-job cash.

When should I prefer Shillong, Jammu, or Bodh Gaya over Guwahati?

Prefer Shillong for published mid-₹26 LPA CTC centres in the Northeast. Prefer Jammu or Bodh Gaya when any published baby-IIM median is required before you pay.

When should I skip IIM Guwahati?

Skip if your accept decision needs an audited median, recruiter mix, or NIRF rank, or if you will confuse mentorship branding with placement proof.

What package should I assume for planning?

Do not assume a package. Official careers copy says the framework is still being built. Stress-test EMI with conservative fixed-cash scenarios and revisit when summers publish.

Is admissions through CAP?

Not for the 2026-28 cycle described on the institute site. Guwahati used a standalone CAT-plus-composite process. See CAP explained for how CAP campuses differ, and re-check Guwahati each year.

What CAT percentile do I need?

Stage-1 General/EWS cut-offs for CAT 2025 were overall 85 with sectionals at 75. Final offers depend on Composite Score ranks within category. Meeting Stage-1 is not an offer.

Does IIMA mentorship guarantee good placements?

No. Mentorship supports academic design and early institution building. Placement outcomes will depend on recruiter engagement and batch execution. Wait for Guwahati’s own report.

Is there an NIRF rank?

Not in NIRF Management 2025. The institute is too new. Do not invent a rank for family debates.

How big is the batch?

Planned size cited at 70 seats. First MBA batch inauguration reporting cited 52 students from 18 states. Confirm your year’s intake in offer communications.

Where is the campus?

Transit campus at Tech City, Bongora, Kamrup, Assam, near Guwahati airport. Permanent campus planned at Marabhita near Palasbari. Details: Campus.

How does Guwahati compare with Shillong?

Shillong is a mature Northeast new IIM with audited placement strength and higher fees. Guwahati is newer, cheaper on the published 2026-28 fee, and evidence-thin on outcomes. Prefer Shillong for proof; prefer Guwahati for Assam founding-batch fit.

Where do I verify numbers before paying?

Primary sources only: https://www.iimg.ac.in/, Academics / fees, Admission process, and Campus. Do not copy aggregator blogs for packages Guwahati has not published.
