How we would model fees and ROI
If you’re comparing fee stickers across IIMs, here’s what matters. Across IIMs, headline fees and headline CTCs are not comparable without definitions. Build a personal model: total cash outlay, conservative first-year earnings, taxes, and living costs. Prefer institutes that publish clear fee circulars and audited placement reports.
Data as of: September 2026. Numbers move every batch year. Jump to the annual fee and payback sheet for campus anchors from our reviews, then verify each circular yourself.
Step 1: Separate fee line items
On the institute site, identify:
- Programme / tuition fee for your batch
- What is included (hostel, mess, deposits) versus excluded
- One-time charges and refundable deposits
- Likely personal living costs for that city
Example of transparent fee communication: IIM Ahmedabad lists a PGP 2025-27 programme fee of ₹27.50 lakh (tuition ₹20.10 lakh) on its admissions pages (IIMA MBA admissions). Use that page’s current circular for decisions, not older WhatsApp tables.
Step 2: Decode placement language
Institutes do not all mean the same thing by “average package.”
- MEP (Maximum Earning Potential): used in IIMA’s IPRS-linked Class of 2025 communication, with mean MEP ₹35.50 LPA and median MEP ₹34.59 LPA, explicitly distinguished from CTC framing (IIMA IPRS note)
- CTC: may include variable pay, joining bonuses, or ESOP marks that are not cash in year one
- Fixed / base: closer to cash planning when disclosed
Our reviews flag definition quality. Start with the IIM Ahmedabad review and the methodology.
Step 3: Simple payback math (directionally useful)
A blunt first pass:
Payback years ≈ Programme fee ÷ conservative annual cash earnings
Using IIMA’s published programme fee and median MEP as an illustration: ₹27.50 lakh ÷ ₹34.59 LPA is under one year of median MEP before taxes, living costs, and opportunity cost. That is directional, not a promise.
Adjustments you should always make:
- Tax
- City living costs
- Pre-MBA salary you forgo
- Probability you land below median (use lower quartile if disclosed)
Step 4: Compare campuses on process, not vibes
| Signal | Stronger evidence | Weaker evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Fees | Batch circular PDF | Aggregator tables |
| Outcomes | Audited / IPRS-style report | Unsourced “highest CTC” graphics |
| Role fit | Sector mix + recruiter lists | Brand hearsay alone |
| Risk | Batch size, location, loan terms | “Any IIM is fine” |
Generation still matters for how strong hiring is, but new and baby IIMs can win on fee-adjusted ROI for some profiles. See old vs new IIMs and best IIMs for ROI.
Step 5: Your target role changes the ROI story
- Consulting / finance pathways at older campuses can support higher fees if you convert into those roles (best for consulting, best for finance)
- Product / general management / entrepreneurship need clearer personal plans; median packages help less if your target role pays differently
- Public sector / niche domestic roles may favour lower absolute fees even if brand is quieter
Rules we use when deciding
- Cap total borrowing at an EMI you can service on a below-median outcome
- Prefer two institutes with transparent disclosures over five opaque ones
- Re-run the model after waitlists move (fee deadlines are real cash events)
- Do not treat NIRF rank as an ROI formula; it is a multi-parameter ranking, useful context only (NIRF Management 2025)
Annual fee and payback sheet
Editorial anchors stamped Sep 2026 from live review frontmatter. Every cell must lose to a newer institute PDF. Definitions differ across campuses; simple payback is fee ÷ cited centre and is directional only. Reading method: how to read IIM placement reports.

Use best IIMs for ROI for shortlist framing after you fill definitions. Offer week: accept or decline.
Where to go next
Building a one-page ROI sheet
Columns: campus, batch-year fee total, deposits note, median (definition), average (definition), city living assumption, loan rate, EMI at median, EMI at median-minus-20%, decision.
Fill only from primary circulars and placement PDFs linked in reviews. Then use the calculator as a second opinion, not the first.
Definition discipline
Never mix MEP and CTC in one comparison cell. If a campus lacks MEP, label CTC and haircut conservatively rather than inventing MEP.
Brand versus payback
Ahmedabad or Calcutta can still be rational with weaker simple payback when option value matters. Lucknow or certain new IIMs can win when debt ceilings dominate. See best for ROI.
Acceptance-week rules
Re-download PDFs the week you wire money. Fee and placement pages can change between shortlist season and acceptance season.
Scholarships and net fee
If scholarships are material, model net fee separately from sticker fee. Do not assume you will win an award. Treat scholarship upside as scenario B, not the base case.
Closing note
Primary documents beat hearsay. If a claim in this page disagrees with a newer institute PDF or official notice, trust the primary source and email corrections to anchal@iimhq.com via the contact page.
Additional practical notes
Write it down. Brands stick in memory; EMI does not. Keep a one-page note with total fee, how they define median salary, the kind of job you want, and why this campus helps.
If you hold multiple offers, decline cleanly and early enough that waitlists can move. Ghosting campuses helps no one and can burn alumni goodwill in narrow functions.
For corrections when institute PDFs change after we stamp a page, use the contact channel with the URL and primary source. We update factual errors promptly under the disclosure policy.
Finally, remember that shortlists are personal. Two strong candidates can correctly choose opposite campuses when city, debt, and pedagogy differ. Our job is evidence and clear recommendations for your constraints.
Frequently asked questions
Is a lower fee always better ROI?
No. A moderately higher fee with stronger audited outcomes and role access can still win. Model cashflows.
Should I use average or median?
Prefer median when available, then run the numbers with a lower bound. Averages are pulled by extremes.
Do scholarships change the framework?
Yes. Net fee after confirmed scholarship is the correct numerator. Do not assume awards you have not received.
Can an education loan cover the full programme fee?
Usually the published programme fee is loan-eligible at major banks and NBFCs, but mess, deposits, laptops, and travel often sit partly outside disbursement. Model EMI on a below-median outcome in the ROI calculator and read scholarships and education loans.
How should I estimate payback years?
Divide all-in cash outlay (fee + realistic living) by a conservative first-year take-home you can defend from the placement PDF definition. Prefer median over average, then stress-test 20% lower. Treat the result as directional, not a promise.
Does the published fee include hostel and mess?
If you’re comparing fee stickers across IIMs, here’s what matters. Often lodging is inside the programme fee while mess, caution deposits, and medical insurance are extra, but each circular differs. Read the inclusion footnotes on the institute fee page for your batch before you compare stickers.
