Accept or decline an IIM offer

Accept when fee, role likelihood, and life design clear your hard constraints. Decline dream logos you cannot fund or would resent. Deadlines are cash events, not vibes.

What this checklist is for

If you’re staring at an offer letter, here’s what matters. Offer week is when brand romance collides with EMI math. This page is a decision checklist, not a celebration script. Use it when you hold one or more IIM MBA / PGP offers (or a serious waitlist) and need a clear accept, decline, or hold decision.

Pair with the matching review, fees and ROI, and how to shortlist IIMs. Run numbers in the ROI calculator only after you re-download the fee circular for your batch.

Data as of: September 2026.

The one-sentence rule

Accept the campus you would still join on a below-median outcome. Decline the logo you would resent after the first loan EMI.

If you cannot say that sentence out loud, you are not ready to wire money.

Pre-accept pack (download before you decide)

For every live offer:

  1. Batch fee circular (programme fee, hostel, mess, deposits, refund rules)
  2. Latest placement PDF with salary definition footnotes
  3. Offer letter deadlines, forfeiture clauses, and waitlist rules
  4. Your household EMI ceiling on a conservative salary
  5. Your role sentence (“I am aiming at ___ roles in ___”)

Reading method for PDFs: how to read IIM placement reports.

Five hard gates

Every gate is a pass/fail. Soft preferences come later.

GatePass looks likeFail looks like
1. Fee budgetTotal cash outlay fits borrowing you can service below medianYou need a miracle CTC to sleep at night
2. Role likelihoodSector tables and alumni paths support your role sentenceYou are betting on a rare tail outcome
3. Life designCity, partner/family constraints, and campus intensity are livableYou will spend two years resenting the location or pedagogy
4. Process honestyYou understand waitlist odds and forfeiture, not hearsayYou are holding seats “just in case” without reading rules
5. Opportunity costThis MBA beats your next-best plan (job, other school, delay)You are escaping a job problem an MBA will not fix

Fail any hard gate and the brand does not rescue the decision.

Scenario A: one offer

  1. Re-open fee and placement PDFs for this batch year.
  2. Run payback at median-minus-20%.
  3. Write why this campus beats staying in your job or taking a non-IIM alternative (IIM vs other B-schools).
  4. If gates pass, accept and decline other pending processes cleanly.
  5. If gates fail, decline even if relatives celebrate the logo.

Scenario B: two or three offers

Build a one-page table:

CampusNet feeDefinition + centreRole fit (1-5)City/life (1-5)Would join on bad outcome?
Offer 1Y/N
Offer 2Y/N

Then open campus-vs-campus compare pages if needed:

Decision rule we use: among campuses that pass fee and life gates, pick the best role fit. Among campuses that tie on role fit, pick clearer disclosure and kinder debt. Brand is the last tie-breaker, not the first.

Scenario C: offer plus waitlist

  1. Read forfeiture and deposit rules on the firm offer.
  2. Estimate waitlist movement from prior years only if the institute publishes it; otherwise assume low visibility.
  3. Do not blow a fundable good offer for a low-visibility dream waitlist unless your household can absorb the loss.
  4. If you hold a deposit on A while waiting for B, calendar the last safe day to switch and set a hard alarm.

Scenario D: CAP offer versus standalone offer

CAP participation is logistics, not a joint rank. A CAP campus offer and an Ahmedabad/Bangalore/Lucknow-style standalone offer are different products. Compare fees, roles, and city the same way you would compare any two reviews. Process explainer: CAP for IIMs.

When we recommend declining a “better brand”

Decline when:

  • The fee forces distress borrowing against a role you are unlikely to convert into
  • You need a metro or dual-career setup the campus cannot support
  • You hate the pedagogy (case intensity, remote location, batch size) and already know it
  • A lower-fee campus with clearer outcomes fits your role sentence better

Preferring Lucknow over a pricier logo, or Mumbai for ops gravity, can be the adult decision. Prestige without solvency is not strategy.

Acceptance-week hygiene

  • Wire only through official channels listed on the offer or institute site
  • Save PDFs and payment receipts in one folder
  • Decline other offers in writing early enough that waitlists can move
  • Tell your recommenders and mentors the final campus so stories stay consistent for summers

Common mistakes

  1. Accepting for parental WhatsApp prestige while failing the fee gate.
  2. Holding multiple deposits past ethics and published rules.
  3. Treating highest CTC as your personal offer letter.
  4. Ignoring mess, caution, and city rent in “programme fee” comparisons.
  5. Changing the role sentence after the logo arrives (“I suddenly want IB”) without evidence.

Closing note

Primary documents beat hearsay. If a newer circular disagrees with a stamped figure on iimHQ, trust the circular and send the source via contact.

Frequently asked questions

Should I wait for all waitlists before accepting anything?

Only if deadlines and deposits allow it without reckless forfeiture. Most candidates cannot hold every dream seat open.

Is a new IIM ever correct over BLACKI?

Yes when fee, role evidence, and life design say so. Read old vs new and the specific reviews.

If you’re staring at an offer letter, here’s what matters. ### What if I am emotionally stuck?

Write the decline email draft for the campus you fear choosing against. If the draft feels like relief, believe that signal.

What should I do next before I pay the acceptance fee?

If you’re staring at an offer letter, here’s what matters. Write fee, median definition, role fit, and waitlist status on one page. If the stress-case EMI fails, pause. Funding help: scholarships and loans.
