CAT

“I’m writing CAT for the IIMs” usually means this exam.

CAT (Common Admission Test) is the national computer-based exam used by the Indian Institutes of Management and many other Indian B-schools for postgraduate management admissions. Scores are reported mainly as overall and sectional percentiles. Meeting CAT eligibility or a percentile floor does not guarantee an interview call; each institute (or CAP cluster) applies its own shortlist and final composite rules.

What CAT is used for

Most two-year IIM MBA / PGP seats shortlist from CAT, then run institute-specific or CAP interviews. Non-IIM B-schools also accept CAT, but their cutoffs, GD/PI formats, and fee structures differ. Treat CAT as a shared entrance signal, not a shared admissions process.

For pathway context, see the CAT exam guide and how to get into an IIM.

Typical pattern (verify each year)

Recent pattern reference (CAT 2025): three sections (VARC, DILR, QA), 68 questions, 120 minutes with 40-minute section locks, as documented in the CAT 2025 media release. Official notices and registration live on iimcat.ac.in.

Sectional performance matters because many IIM shortlists impose sectional floors or award CAT points by section. A high overall percentile with a collapsed section can still fail Stage I filters.

How institutes use CAT scores

StageWhat CAT usually doesWhat it does not do
Eligibility / Stage IClears sectional and overall floorsGuarantee a call
Shortlist compositeSupplies a large weight (varies by campus)Replace academics or diversity factors
Final offerOften shrinks as WAT/PI weight risesGuarantee conversion

BLACKI campuses generally run standalone processes. Many newer IIMs use CAP for interview logistics while keeping independent merit lists. Details: selection criteria explained and cutoffs explained.

Worked shortlist example

A candidate posts 98+ overall with a weak DILR sectional. Relatives celebrate “IIM locked.” The shortlist sheet still needs each target institute’s Stage I floors and CAT point split from the year’s PDF. Campuses that price DILR heavily may withhold a call despite the overall percentile. Correct next step: open selection PDFs for the five campuses you would actually join, mark sectional floors in the sheet, and only then forecast calls. Mock interview calendars should wait until those PDFs confirm you clear Stage I, so you do not burn February on campuses that never shortlist that sectional profile.

Misuse story

A household treated a 99%ile as an IIM seat and delayed WAT/PI prep until results season panic. Calls arrived; writing and interview skills had not. CAT percentile is a competitive national score. Calls still follow institute composites, and final offers often shrink CAT’s weight as WAT/PI rises. Another common failure: mapping last year’s “cutoff hearsay” onto this year’s PDF, then discovering sectional floors moved. Read the live notice on iimcat.ac.in and each institute PDF before predicting conversion.

Common misunderstandings

  • “99%ile means IIM.” It means you cleared a competitive national score. Calls still follow institute composites.
  • “Overall is all that matters.” Sectional floors and sectional point splits can decide shortlists.
  • “CAT cutoffs are the same every year.” Floors and composites move. Read the year’s PDF.
  • “CAT equals IPMAT.” IPMAT is a different exam for integrated programmes such as Indore IPM.

Practical next steps

  1. Confirm the live pattern and calendar on iimcat.ac.in.
  2. Build sectional strengths, especially DILR where institutes price it heavily.
  3. After results, open each target institute’s selection PDF before predicting calls.
  4. Prepare WAT/PI as a separate project; CAT alone does not convert offers.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 99%ile guarantee an IIM call?

No. Overall percentile is one input. Sectional floors, academics, diversity factors, and each institute’s composite still decide shortlists. Open the live policy PDF for every campus you would actually join.

Is CAT the same as IPMAT?

No. CAT feeds most two-year IIM MBA/PGP seats. IPMAT-style tests feed five-year IPM routes after Class 12. Different exams, calendars, and campus sets. See the IPMAT exam guide.
