CAP

“I’m in CAP” means shared interview logistics for some newer IIMs, not one joint seat.

CAP (Common Admission Process) coordinates applications and interview logistics for many newer IIMs. It is not a single joint merit list for all IIMs, and old IIMs (BLACKI) generally run separate processes.

What CAP does and does not do

CAP typically doesCAP typically does not
Share WAT/PI scheduling and form logistics across participating campusesCreate one common final rank for every IIM
Reduce duplicate interview travel for candidates holding multiple new-IIM shortlistsOverride each institute’s own composite and offer rules
Publish participating-institute lists for a given yearInclude Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow, Kozhikode, Indore by default

Exact participant lists change by cycle. Always check the year’s CAP portal (for example recent cycles hosted paths such as cap2025.iimbg.ac.in) and each institute’s admission note.

Why applicants confuse CAP with a joint offer

CAP feels “joint” because you may sit shared interview rounds. Offers still come from individual institutes using their own weights, waitlists, and seat matrices. Clearing a CAP interview does not mean every participating campus will offer you a seat.

Worked shortlist example

A candidate holds CAP shortlists for three newer IIMs and a standalone call from one older campus. They mark one CAP calendar block and assume all three new-IIM offers will arrive together after that interview day. Correct plan: keep a CAP form and interview calendar, then a separate row per institute for composite weights, waitlist behaviour, and fee circular deadlines. CAP can collapse travel. It cannot collapse three merit lists into one decision. Rank the three CAP campuses on fee, city, and role fit before interview season so an early offer does not force a panic accept while better fits are still pending.

Misuse story

A household assumed “CAP cleared” meant a joint IIM seat and stopped preparing for BLACKI AWT/PI dates that landed the same fortnight. They missed a standalone interview window while celebrating the shared CAP round. CAP is not a joint offer. If you hold both CAP and standalone calls, keep two calendars. CAP form deadlines and BLACKI AWT/PI dates collide every season; missing either is an unforced error.

CAP versus BLACKI standalone

  • BLACKI (and several other older campuses): independent shortlists and AWT/WAT-PI cycles. See campus guides such as Ahmedabad and Bangalore.
  • Many newer / baby IIMs: CAP logistics plus institute-level merit. Brand and hiring strength still differ campus by campus. See old vs new IIMs.

Practical checklist

  1. Confirm whether each target campus is CAP or standalone for your CAT year.
  2. Track CAP form deadlines separately from institute offer deadlines.
  3. Do not reuse CAP composite intuition on Lucknow or Bangalore policies.
  4. After offers, compare fee circulars and placement PDFs per campus, not “CAP average” hearsay.

Frequently asked questions

Does clearing CAP mean every participating IIM will offer me a seat?

No. CAP shares interview logistics. Each institute still builds its own merit list, waitlist, and fee circular. Rank CAP campuses separately before an early offer forces a panic accept.

Do BLACKI campuses use CAP?

Not by default. Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow, Kozhikode, and Indore generally run standalone processes. Confirm the year’s participant list on the live CAP portal.
