What getting in actually takes
If you’re mapping CAT to an IIM offer, here’s what matters. Getting into an IIM is a four-stage process: clear CAT eligibility and score thresholds, earn interview calls under each institute’s own policy, convert through WAT/PI, then accept an offer you can actually fund. No single percentile guarantees BLACKI, and CAP cutoffs do not equal final admits.
Data as of: September 2026. Always re-check iimcat.ac.in and each institute’s current admission policy PDF.
Stage 1: Eligibility and CAT
CAT is the shared gate for most two-year MBA/PGP seats across IIMs. Official CAT eligibility requires a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent / specified professional qualification) with at least 50% marks, or 45% for SC/ST/PwD, including final-year candidates who can produce proof before joining (CAT 2025 Information Bulletin via IIMA; announcements also on IIM Kozhikode’s CAT notice).
CAT 2025 was a 120-minute CBT with three timed sections (VARC 24, DILR 22, QA 22; 40 minutes each) as confirmed in the CAT 2025 media release. Treat next year’s question count as provisional until the new bulletin publishes.

Stage 2: Build a shortlist before results day
Do not wait for the scorecard to invent preferences. Cap your list at 4 to 6 institutes you would actually join, using fees, role fit, location, and evidence quality. Generation labels (old / new / baby) are shorthand, not destiny.
Build the list with fees and role fit first, then CAT realism. A dream-only BLACKI list with no protection campuses is how strong percentiles still end in panic in April. A protection-only list with no honest top choice is how people accept seats they resent in July.

Stage 3: Understand how shortlists actually work
IIMs do not share one composite formula.
- BLACKI and other non-CAP old/new campuses publish independent policies. Example: IIM Bangalore’s post-PI weights include PI 40, WAT 10, CAT 25, academics and work experience for the remainder (IIMB admission process). IIM Calcutta’s published final weights include CAT 30, PI 48, WAT 8, academic diversity 6, work experience 8 (IIMC domestic admission procedure).
- CAP is a shared PI/WAT pipeline for a cluster of participating IIMs; each still finalises merit independently (CAP 2025 portal).

What fails at this stage: treating a coaching “cutoff list” as a call predictor, ignoring sectional floors while celebrating overall percentile, and assuming CAP logistics mean a shared offer. Shortlist math is campus-specific even when interviews share a hall. Download each policy PDF the week it drops; stale Telegram screenshots lose people seats every cycle. Detail on layers: cutoffs explained.
Stage 4: WAT/PI conversion
Interview calls are not offers. WAT/PI weight is often decisive at older campuses (see Bangalore and Calcutta weight tables above; IIMA’s process centres on AWT + PI after composite shortlisting per IIMA MBA admissions).
Skip coaching hype; use the WAT/PI guide.
What fails at this stage: walking in with a 99 and a brochure-script “why this IIM,” inventing work impact you cannot defend under follow-ups, and treating CAP day as a casual rehearsal because other calls remain. One careless CAP attempt can land in multiple participating files. Build a one-page evidence CV, three role hypotheses, and honest gap explanations before you polish vocabulary.
Stage 5: Convert and fund the seat
Before you accept:
- Re-read the fee circular for your batch year (programme fee vs living costs).
- Prefer audited placement definitions (for example IIMA’s MEP framing in its IPRS materials) over screenshot CTCs.
- Model loan EMI against a conservative first-year cash figure, not the top decile.
- Keep one backup non-IIM or later-cycle option if your risk tolerance is low.
What fails at this stage: wiring fees on highest-CTC hearsay, mixing MEP and CTC across two offer letters in one Excel cell, and accepting a campus you would decline on a below-median outcome. Offer week is a cash and fit test. Run the fee payback calculator and the accept or decline checklist before deposits leave the account.
Realistic timeline (typical CAT cycle)
| Window | What usually happens |
|---|---|
| Jul-Aug | CAT notification and registration open on iimcat.ac.in |
| Nov | Exam day (CAT 2025: 30 Nov 2025) |
| Dec-Jan | Scorecards; institute shortlist emails begin |
| Jan-Mar | AWT/WAT + PI (institute-wise or via CAP) |
| Mar-May | Offers, waitlists, fee payments |
| Jun-Jul | Registration / term start (varies by campus) |
Exact dates move every year. Bookmark the CAT site and your shortlisted institutes’ admissions pages.
Who should skip the “any IIM at any cost” path
- Candidates who cannot responsibly service fees even at newer campuses
- Applicants chasing brand alone without a role hypothesis
- Anyone treating sectional CAT floors as optional (most policies require them)

Season map
- Profile and mock phase
- CAT execution (CAT guide)
- Shortlist PDF week (cutoffs)
- WAT/PI phase (WAT/PI)
- Offer economics (fees/ROI)
Skipping step 5 creates expensive accepts. Skipping step 4 creates expensive rejects after great CATs.
Parallel applications
Apply to a coverage set: dream BLACKI, realistic BLACKI, and CAP/new-IIM protection if needed. Coverage is risk management.
Mindset
Treat each institute as its own product. The IIM tag is shared; how strong hiring is for your role, fees, and culture are not. Use reviews and top IIMs to stay specific.
Metrics that matter by phase
Mocks and sectional floors before CAT. PDF-based call models after CAT. Interview convert rates after shortlists. Fee and median definitions after offers. Use the metric that matches the phase you are in.

Frequently asked questions
Is 99+ percentile enough for IIM Ahmedabad or Bangalore?
No. High CAT percentiles help, but shortlists and final offers also use academics, diversity factors, work experience, and AWT/WAT/PI. Read each year’s policy on the institute site.
Do I need work experience?
Not for most flagship two-year MBA programmes. Some institutes award points for experience in shortlist or final composites (for example IIMB’s published weights). Freshers still convert every year.
If you’re planning the CAT-to-offer path, here’s what matters. ### Is CAP easier than BLACKI?
CAP shares interview logistics across participating IIMs. Cutoffs, final weights, and seat competition remain campus-specific, so treat “easier process” as logistics only.
What should I do next this week?
Pick the stage you are actually in (CAT, shortlist, WAT/PI, or offer) and ignore the others for seven days. Stage guides: CAT, WAT-PI, offer accept or decline.
What is the most common admission mistake?
If you’re mapping CAT to an IIM offer, here’s what matters. Treating one overall percentile as a guarantee and under-preparing WAT/PI after the call. Calls are earned twice: on CAT composites and in the room.
