Best IIMs for operations and supply chain

Our quick take

If ops or supply chain is the plan, start with IIM Mumbai, then add Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Lucknow, Indore, or Kozhikode when you want BLACKI brand flexibility or a different city constraint. Mumbai’s NITIE industrial management heritage is the clearest specialised signal in the IIM system. Verify ops/SCM/manufacturing rows in the latest PDF before you treat any campus as an “ops school.”

This is an editorial shortlist for ops-intent candidates, not a claim that other IIMs never place into operations. Scoring philosophy: methodology.

Data as of: September 2026.

What “operations” means here

Label you wantWhat to look forCampus gravity (editorial)
Supply chain / logistics leadershipSCM, logistics, e-commerce opsMumbai first; Bangalore and Ahmedabad credible
Manufacturing / industrial managementManufacturing, heavy industry, plantsMumbai heritage; Ahmedabad ecosystem adjacency
Ops consultingOps/strategy consulting hybridsMumbai, Ahmedabad, Bangalore
Conglomerate leadership rotationsGeneral management with ops modulesBLACKI depth plus Mumbai

If you actually want product management, use best for product. If you want pure consulting branding, use best for consulting.

How we rank this list

  1. Historical recruiter trust in ops/SCM/manufacturing
  2. City access to plants, ports, logistics hubs, and ops employers
  3. Placement disclosure that separates ops from vague “others”
  4. Brand backup if you later pivot to consulting/GM
  5. Fee math for debt-funded candidates who will not chase consulting CTC screenshots

Campus notes

IIM Mumbai

Default first research campus for ops-intent candidates. In our framing Mumbai is a specialised metro school with industrial management roots dating to 1963 (NITIE). Fee anchor near ₹25.00 lakh plus caution, mess separate. Read the Batch of 2024 PDF and the Mumbai review before you compare it emotionally to BLACKI WhatsApp tiers.

IIM Ahmedabad

Prefer Ahmedabad when you want ops plus maximum brand flexibility, or manufacturing-adjacent ecosystems around the campus. Do not pick Ahmedabad solely for ops if Mumbai’s specialised gravity fits better and fees/work location favour Mumbai.

IIM Bangalore

Prefer Bangalore for e-commerce ops, tech operations, and hybrids that sit between product and supply chain. City access matters.

IIM Lucknow

Prefer Lucknow when you want old-IIM signalling with a published fee near ₹20.75 lakh and mid-₹30 LPA CTC centres in recent cycles, and you are open to a non-metro campus. Pair with Lucknow vs Mumbai.

How to read a PDF for operations

  1. Find manufacturing, logistics, SCM, operations, or e-commerce ops labels.
  2. Check whether consulting rows include ops consulting.
  3. Note plant/location constraints for the roles you want.
  4. Prefer medians or clear centres over highest CTC.
  5. Compare fee circulars in the same batch year.

Method: how to read IIM placement reports.

How households misread ops shortlists

Ops-intent candidates lose time in two opposite traps. Some reject Mumbai because a tier list still says “baby,” then chase a consulting-maximal BLACKI campus while every PI story is plant-floor or SCM. Others treat any operations elective brochure as placement proof and skip the sector table.

Read the PDF for manufacturing, logistics, SCM, e-commerce ops, and ops-consulting labels. Prefer medians or clear centres over highest CTC. Price Mumbai living costs against residential campuses before you call a sticker gap decisive. If your target is ops consulting with brand backup, Ahmedabad or Bangalore can still win; if your target is specialised industrial or SCM identity, start with Mumbai’s NITIE-rooted recruiter map and verify the live Batch of 2024 PDF.

Debt-funded candidates should model a below-median ops outcome against the fee circular they will actually sign. Ops year-one cash often sits below consulting medians. A campus that wins the WhatsApp ops argument can still lose the EMI argument.

Mumbai and the NITIE heritage

Here’s the short version: IIM Mumbai’s industrial management lineage (NITIE, 1963) is still the clearest specialised ops signal inside the IIM system. Recruiter habit for manufacturing, logistics, and SCM did not reset the day the IIM name arrived.

NIRF Management 2025 puts Mumbai at #6 (77.58). That rank sits inside the national top band; the ops identity is older than the rank table. Fee framing near ₹25.00 lakh plus caution needs living-cost honesty in the city. Read the Batch of 2024 PDF for logistics and manufacturing participation before you compare Mumbai emotionally to BLACKI WhatsApp tiers. Full campus judgment: Mumbai review.

Prefer Mumbai when specialised industrial or SCM identity is the plan. Prefer Ahmedabad or Bangalore when you want ops plus maximum consulting/GM brand backup.

OSCM track versus flagship MBA

Some candidates chase an “ops programme sticker.” Others want flagship MBA flexibility with ops electives and sector hiring. Those are different products.

Specialised ops gravity (Mumbai-first) fits when your five-year plan is supply chain, manufacturing leadership, or industrial management, and you want peer density and recruiter habit built for that. Confirm programme labels and sector tables for your batch on iimmumbai.ac.in.

Flagship BLACKI with ops paths fits when you want plant or SCM roles plus a clean pivot into consulting, product-ops, or general management if hiring softens. Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Lucknow, Indore, and Kozhikode all place ops roles; volume and identity vary. Lucknow’s ~₹20.75 lakh fee framing often wins when debt is real and you still want old-IIM signalling.

Do not pick a specialised path solely for brochure language. Do not pick a flagship solely for logo flexibility while every PI story is plant-floor ops. Match curriculum identity to the story you will actually tell.

Manufacturing and supply chain recruiters

Ops hiring clusters around plants, ports, logistics hubs, e-commerce fulfilment, and conglomerate leadership rotations. City access matters.

  • Mumbai for industrial, logistics, and markets-adjacent ops-finance hybrids
  • Ahmedabad for manufacturing and pharma ecosystem adjacency plus brand backup
  • Bangalore for e-commerce ops and tech operations
  • Lucknow / Indore / Kozhikode for diversified conglomerate and SCM paths when call width or fee math needs BLACKI depth

Open the PDF for manufacturing, logistics, SCM, e-commerce ops, and ops-consulting labels. Note plant or location constraints. Prefer medians or clear centres over highest CTC. Method: how to read IIM placement reports.

When ops beats consulting for your profile

If you hold both an ops-strong call and a consulting-maximal call, ask which craft you will still enjoy at 11 p.m. on a tough week.

Prefer ops-first when:

  • Your internships, projects, and energy sit in plants, logistics, fulfilment, or process design
  • You want specialised recruiter habit more than MBB density
  • Year-one cash stability on an ops median beats financing a consulting lottery (ops cash often sits below consulting domain averages in the same PDF)
  • Mumbai’s city and NITIE-rooted map fit your life better than a campus-centric BLACKI consulting culture

Prefer consulting-first when you thrive on case interviews, client travel, and strategy narratives, and the fee plan still works at below-median fixed cash. Cross-read best for consulting before you force an ops CV into an MBB shortlist.

Common mistakes

  • Rejecting Mumbai because a Telegram list still says “baby.”
  • Choosing a consulting-maximal campus while your PI stories are all plant-floor ops.
  • Ignoring city living costs in Mumbai versus residential IIM campuses.
  • Treating any “operations” elective brochure as placement proof.
  • Mixing OSCM identity with flagship flexibility without deciding which risk you prefer.

Practical shortlist worksheet

  1. Write the ops sentence (SCM / manufacturing / ops consulting / e-commerce ops).
  2. Rank Mumbai / A / B / L / I / K for that sentence.
  3. Cut campuses your CAT profile will not reach.
  4. Open fee and sector tables.
  5. Accept only if you would join on a below-median ops outcome (accept or decline).

Frequently asked questions

Is Mumbai always ahead of BLACKI for ops?

For specialised ops/SCM identity, Mumbai is our default research leader. For brand-maximal pivots into consulting, Ahmedabad or Bangalore can still win. Read both PDFs.

Should I pick an OSCM track over a flagship MBA?

Pick the specialised track when ops is the five-year plan and you want peer and recruiter density built for it. Pick flagship BLACKI when you need consulting/GM backup beside ops. Confirm programme labels for your batch.

Can new IIMs work for manufacturing roles?

Yes in thinner tails when plants and conglomerates hire there. Demand evidence, not hope.

When should ops beat a consulting shortlist?

When your craft, location, and fee stress tests all point to plants, SCM, or industrial leadership rather than case-interview intensity. Prestige alone is a weak reason to abandon a specialised fit.
