Our quick take
Say “old,” “new,” and “baby” out loud as history and hiring density shorthand, then put the fee circular and placement PDF on the table. An old IIM is not automatically the best ROI. A newer campus can still work when fees, role access, and disclosure quality line up for your profile. Legal status is the same family of Institutes of National Importance under the IIM Act framework. Slang does not create a lesser degree.
Scoring philosophy: methodology.
Data as of: September 2026.
Snapshot: what the labels usually mean
| Label | Rough meaning in applicant slang | Typical campuses people mean | Decision implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Old | Earliest IIMs (often BLACKI + peers) | Ahmedabad, Calcutta, Bangalore, Lucknow, Kozhikode, Indore; Mumbai often discussed nearby in shortlists | Stronger brand defaults; higher absolute fees common |
| New | 1990s-2000s expansion campuses | Shillong and peers from that expansion wave | Competitive outcomes; still verify sector depth |
| Baby | Post-2010 campuses | Bodh Gaya, Sirmaur, Sambalpur, Jammu, Visakhapatnam, and siblings | Often CAP-linked interview logistics; wider fee/ROI spread |
Exact founding years matter less than the homework you do on the latest fee circular and placement PDF. Generation is a prior, not a verdict.
Brand and ranking signal
Older campuses dominate mindshare and often NIRF’s top band. On NIRF Management 2025:
| Institute | NIRF 2025 | Score | Generation shorthand |
|---|---|---|---|
| IIM Ahmedabad | #1 | 83.29 | Old |
| IIM Bangalore | #2 | 81.56 | Old |
| IIM Kozhikode | #3 | 79.85 | Old |
| IIM Lucknow | #5 | 77.97 | Old |
| IIM Calcutta | #7 | 77.34 | Old |
| IIM Indore | #8 | 75.68 | Old |
Newer campuses can still rank well and place graduates. You will need to read more official fee and placement PDFs yourself, because MBB and IB hiring on average is thinner. Rank movement inside the old set (for example Calcutta at #7 while Lucknow sits at #5) does not rewrite generation labels. See the NIRF glossary.
Brand psychology shows up in family conversations and in some HR screens that still sort resumes by campus age. That is unfair to strong newer cohorts and still real. Your job is to separate ego from fee-and-role math.
Academics and peer culture
Old IIMs. Thicker alumni networks in classic MBA sectors, denser club casebooks, and peer competition that assumes everyone is chasing consulting or finance until proven otherwise. Classroom intensity varies: Ahmedabad’s case culture, Bangalore’s product-adjacent energy, Calcutta’s quant-finance lore, Kozhikode’s residential hill-campus culture, Lucknow’s fee-efficient BLACKI seriousness, Indore’s large-cohort dynamics and IPM pathway.
Newer IIMs. Smaller or younger alumni bases, newer infrastructure on many campuses, and sharper niche positioning in some cases (ops, public policy adjacency, regional industry ties). Peer quality can still be high when CAT bars bite. The risk is fewer MBB and top-firm seats on average, not “fake IIM” status.
Visit official programme pages. Do not outsource campus culture to memes. For consulting hiring specifically, start with best for consulting. For finance, start with best for finance.
Admissions: CAP versus independent cycles
Many baby and newer campuses participate in CAP shared WAT/PI logistics while keeping independent merit lists. CAP 2025 materials live at cap2025.iimbg.ac.in. Older campuses generally run independent AWT/WAT-PI cycles.
| Process type | What changes for you | What does not change |
|---|---|---|
| Independent (typical old IIMs) | Separate forms, separate interview calendars, campus-specific weight tables | You still need CAT sectionals and interview conversion |
| CAP-linked (many newer IIMs) | Shared interview logistics; one travel plan can cover multiple campuses | Each IIM still builds its own merit list and fee circular |
Details: selection criteria explained, CAP for IIMs explained, WAT/PI guide. Rejecting every CAP campus because “CAP means lesser” is a process superstition. CAP is logistics. Evaluating IIM Raipur, IIM Trichy, or IIM Udaipur still requires their fee and placement PDFs.
We do not invent cutoffs. Shortlist bars move yearly. Old-IIM floors are often extreme on overall percentile; newer campuses can still be selective once composite weights and category rules apply. Read the PDF that matches your CAT cycle.
Fees and outcomes
Absolute fees at older campuses can be high. Examples from our reviews (verify your batch circular):
| Campus | Fee anchor | Outcomes centre | ROI note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ahmedabad | ₹27.50 lakh PGP 2025-27 | Median MEP ₹34.59 LPA (Class of 2025) | Brand-max; high absolute fee |
| Bangalore | ₹26.00 lakh domestic PGP 2026-28 | Median ₹34.75 LPA (PGP+PGPBA 2024-26) | Strong among top-two on sticker + outcomes |
| Kozhikode | ₹23.50 lakh PGP 2025-27 | Median CTC ₹27.50 LPA (2025 report) | #3 NIRF; read domain tables |
| Lucknow | ~₹20.75 lakh PGP 2025-27 | Median CTC ~₹31 LPA (2023-25 cycle) | Often the fee-efficient old-IIM story |
| Indore | ₹20L / ₹24L course fee by batch year | Median CTC ₹27 LPA (2023-25) | Large batch variance |
| Calcutta | Confirm domestic circular | Primary placement downloads | Do not use MBAEx/PGDBA fee lines |
Newer campuses sometimes improve fee-adjusted payback for applicants who will not convert into top-deck consulting or IB seats. That advantage disappears if the placement PDF’s centre does not hold or if definitions are vague. Framework: fees and ROI, best for ROI, ROI calculator.
Definition trap. Comparing an old IIM’s MEP or fixed-cash median to a newer campus’s inflated CTC average invents fake ROI. Label definitions in every spreadsheet cell.
Who should prefer which
Prefer older IIMs if
- You want maximum brand default for consulting, finance, or brand-sensitive GM
- Your fee cap can absorb mid-₹20s programme costs (or you convert aid)
- You thrive in dense peer competition and thick alumni networks
- You can clear independent AWT/WAT-PI cycles
Prefer newer / CAP campuses if
- CAT risk is real and you need width in the protect bucket
- Absolute fee control and honest medians beat chasing the flashiest logo for your household
- You have verified function tables for the roles you actually want
- You accept fewer top-firm seats on average as a real trade-off
Prefer a mixed shortlist (our default advice) if
- You want one or two stretch old IIMs plus one protect campus with verified disclosures
- Dual offers may arrive across generations and you need a pre-committed decision rule
Pair with how to shortlist IIMs and how to get into an IIM.
A sane decision rule
- Fix the kind of job you want and your budget first.
- Require disclosure quality (fee circular + placement definitions) for every campus on the list.
- Only then prefer older brand if the first two filters still pass.
- Keep one newer or CAP campus in the protect bucket if your CAT risk is real.
- Run the numbers on debt at 20% below median fixed cash before you celebrate any generation label.
- Accept the best convertible fit for your constraints.
Common mistakes
- Treating “baby IIM” as an official MoE term or a lesser legal degree.
- Rejecting all CAP campuses because interview logistics are shared.
- Choosing an old IIM solely for parental prestige while the fee breaks household cash flow.
- Choosing a new IIM solely because the fee is lower while ignoring employment risk and vague PDFs.
- Confusing NIRF rank movement inside BLACKI with a change in generation.
- Mixing CTC, MEP, and fixed cash across generations in one ROI chart.
- Building an all-stretch old-IIM list with no protect campus for CAT downside.
- Assuming every old IIM has identical consulting hiring; Bangalore’s published consulting share near 45% of finals is not universal.
Additional practical notes
Write it down. Brands stick in memory; EMI does not. Keep a one-page note with total fee, median definition, the job you want, and why this campus helps.
If you hold multiple offers, decline cleanly and early enough that waitlists can move. Ghosting campuses helps no one and can burn alumni goodwill in narrow functions.
For corrections when institute PDFs change after we stamp a page, use the contact channel with the URL and official source. We update factual errors promptly under the disclosure policy.
Finally, remember that shortlists are personal. Two strong candidates can correctly choose opposite campuses when city, debt, and pedagogy differ. Our job is evidence and clear recommendations for your constraints.
When a newer campus is the smarter convert
A newer or CAP-linked campus often wins when absolute fee control beats chasing a stretch old-IIM logo you are unlikely to convert, when verified function tables match your plan, and when disclosure quality (fee circular + placement definitions) is honest. It loses when you treat thinner MBB or IB volume as temporary, or when vague PDFs hide definition gaps. Keep one protect campus if CAT risk is real. Stretch-only BLACKI lists fail in bad percentile years.
CAP logistics versus campus quality
CAP shares interview travel for many newer IIMs. Each institute still builds its own merit list, waitlist, and fee circular. Clearing a CAP interview does not mean every participating campus will offer you a seat. Rejecting every CAP campus because “CAP means lesser” is a process superstition. Evaluating Raipur, Trichy, or Udaipur still requires their PDFs. Detail: CAP for IIMs explained.
Brand premium: when to pay it
Pay the old-IIM premium when consulting, finance, or brand-sensitive GM density is the plan and your household can carry mid-₹20s fees on below-median outcomes. Skip the premium when similar roles appear on a verified newer campus with far lower debt, or when the old-IIM call is a stretch you will resent funding. Price brand flexibility; do not worship it. Related: best for ROI, best for consulting.
Frequently asked questions
Is “baby IIM” an official MoE term?
No. It is applicant slang. Always use the institute’s legal name and policy PDF.
Should I reject all CAP campuses?
No. CAP is logistics. Evaluate each participating IIM on fees, roles, and disclosures. See CAP glossary.
Is Lucknow “worse” than Ahmedabad because fees are lower?
No. Lucknow is still an old IIM. Lower fees can improve household ROI even when brand sits a notch below A/B for some elite desks. Read the Lucknow review.
Did Calcutta become a new IIM when NIRF ranked it #7?
No. Calcutta is a founding-era IIM (1961). Rank movement is not generation change. See A vs C.
Can I reach MBB from a new IIM?
Occasionally, yes. Probability and seat volume are usually lower. Treat it as upside after a Tier 1 plan, not as the plan. See best for consulting.
How many campuses should my shortlist include?
Enough to cover stretch and protect without diluting WAT/PI prep. For most consulting or finance aspirants, that means a few old-IIM targets plus one verified newer protect option if CAT risk is real. Use how to shortlist IIMs.
Is IIM Mumbai a “baby” school?
WhatsApp lists often say yes because the IIM name is recent. Institutional roots run to 1963 as NITIE. Treat ops heritage and the latest PDF as the decision inputs, not the slang age. See Lucknow vs Mumbai.
Where should I read campus-level detail?
Start with live reviews for Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow, Kozhikode, Indore, Mumbai, and the newer campuses you actually hold calls from.
