Our quick take
If consulting is the plan, start with Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta, then add Lucknow, Kozhikode, and Indore when you need more call options after CAT. Newer campuses can still place consultants, but older IIMs usually see more consulting offers and stronger brand pull. Verify each year’s placement PDF for consulting headcount, not LinkedIn anecdotes.
We treat this as an editorial shortlist for aspiring consultants, not a claim that other IIMs never place into consulting. Scoring philosophy lives in our methodology.

How we rank this list
We prioritise four things, in this order:
- How strong consulting hiring has been on campus, and how often recruiters default to the brand among Indian CXOs and partner tracks
- Peer competition that feeds case interview practice without forcing you into a single firm cult
- Disclosure quality in placement reporting (function tables, firm lists, definition of salary)
- City and alumni access that help networking between summers and finals
We do not rank on highest CTC screenshots. Consulting conversion is a volume and process story: how many serious consulting processes run on campus, how many peers prepare cases daily, and whether summer PPOs feed the same desks. A campus can post a flashy top package while placing only a thin consulting tail.
Generation trade-offs sit in old vs new IIMs. Fee discipline for debt-financed degrees sits in fees and ROI and best for ROI.
Brand and ranking signal
Brand opens the first door. Case performance closes it. NIRF is context for shortlist psychology, not a consulting formula.
Ahmedabad’s #1 and Bangalore’s #2 scores (83.29 and 81.56) match how many recruiters still treat A and B as default Indian MBA brands. Kozhikode’s #3 (79.85) is a strong BLACKI signal even when batch medians trail A/B on CTC tables. Lucknow’s #5 (77.97) sitting above Calcutta’s #7 (77.34) in 2025 does not rewrite consulting recruiter memory. Calcutta remains a founding IIM with dense alumni routes into strategy and advisory. Indore’s #8 still reads as old IIM, not “new campus stretch.”
Use the NIRF glossary when someone in your family confuses a one-year rank move with a career collapse. Rank movement is real. Recruiter habits are sticky.
Academics and peer culture for consulting
Consulting staffing rewards structured problem solving under time pressure. Campuses that normalise case cold-calling, club casebooks, and mock interviews tend to convert more of the batch into consulting processes.
Ahmedabad. Case-method intensity is the public culture story. Peer competition is high. Our Ahmedabad review treats that intensity as a feature for consulting aspirants and a misfit for people who want a quiet residential MBA.
Bangalore. General management depth plus Bengaluru’s consulting and product adjacency. The Placement Report 2026 shows consulting at about 45% of final offers for PGP+PGPBA 2024-26, with summer consulting share near 47% in the same CDS materials. That concentration helps consulting aspirants and concentrates risk if the consulting market softens. Read the Bangalore review.
Calcutta. Quant-comfortable classroom culture with finance lore that often overlaps consulting staffing (especially for candidates who can sell both analytic depth and client communication). Triple Crown accreditation is a credential signal for some international screens. See the Calcutta review.
Lucknow, Kozhikode, Indore. Serious consulting traffic without always matching A/B absolute volume. Kozhikode’s 2025 report cites consulting near 32% of offers with domain average CTC near ₹33.13 LPA. Indore’s 2023-25 finals PDF cites consulting and finance combined near 49%. Use domain tables, not batch medians alone.
Admissions implications for consulting aspirants
Getting the call is half the consulting plan. Converting the call is the other half.
- Ahmedabad: Standalone CAT shortlist into AWT and PI. Academic filters and interview pressure are real. Process detail: Ahmedabad selection criteria.
- Bangalore: Published pre-PI and post-PI weight tables; WAT is scored. Work-ex often appears in both stages. See Bangalore selection criteria.
- Calcutta: Stage I CAT floors (Open example for the 2026-28 policy: VARC ≥80, DILR ≥80, QA ≥75, overall ≥85). Final composite gives PI 48 of 100 points. Weak interview communication is a consulting plan risk before you ever open a casebook. See Calcutta selection criteria.
- Lucknow / Kozhikode / Indore: Read that year’s standalone policy. Do not recycle CAP intuition for BLACKI campuses.
Broader framing: selection criteria explained and WAT/PI guide. Case interviews and WAT/PI both reward structure over jargon, and they test different skills.
We do not invent cutoffs. Shortlist bars move every year with pool composition. Treat last year’s WhatsApp percentile sheets as hearsay until you open the live PDF.
Fees and outcomes for consulting plans
Consulting offers often sit above batch medians inside domain tables, but you still finance the fee on median-risk math unless you already hold a PPO.
| Campus | Published fee anchor | Outcome anchor | Consulting lens |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ahmedabad | ₹27.50 lakh PGP 2025-27 | Median MEP ₹34.59 LPA (Class of 2025) | Brand + IPRS clarity; high absolute fee |
| Bangalore | ₹26.00 lakh domestic PGP 2026-28 | Median ₹34.75 LPA; consulting ~45% finals | Strong fee vs outcomes among top-two brands |
| Calcutta | Confirm domestic circular | Primary MBA placement downloads | Finance-and-strategy gravity; avoid MBAEx fee confusion |
| Lucknow | ~₹20.75 lakh (2025-27 PDF) | Median CTC ~₹31 LPA (2023-25 cycle) | Often the fee-efficient BLACKI consulting hedge |
| Kozhikode | ₹23.50 lakh (2025-27) | Median CTC ₹27.50 LPA; consulting domain avg ~₹33.13 LPA | Domain table matters more than batch median |
| Indore | ₹20L / ₹24L course fee by batch | Median CTC ₹27 LPA; consulting+finance ~49% | Large batch variance; read summer shares |

Who should prefer which tier
Prefer Tier 1 (A / B / C) if
- You want the most consulting offers on campus and alumni who can help you prep cases
- Your fee cap can absorb mid-₹20s to high-₹20s programme costs
- You can sustain high peer case competition without burning out before finals
Prefer Tier 2 (L / K / I) if
- You need call-probability insurance after CAT risk
- Absolute fee control matters (especially Lucknow’s ~₹20.75 lakh framing)
- You will still prepare cases with the same seriousness as an A/B peer
Prefer Tier 3 stretch only if
- Tier 1 and Tier 2 calls are unlikely and you still want consulting upside
- You have verified consulting lines in the latest placement PDF
- You accept thinner MBB volume as a probability, not a betrayal
City fit still breaks ties. Prefer Bangalore when Bengaluru staffing and product-adjacent strategy roles matter. Prefer Ahmedabad when you want the strongest pan-India brand and heavy case culture. Prefer Calcutta when Joka alumni networks and finance-strategy crossover fit your story. Pair with how to shortlist IIMs.
Common mistakes
- Choosing solely on “highest CTC” screenshots instead of consulting headcount and firm lists.
- Confusing Big-4 advisory volume with MBB partner-track probability without reading role quality.
- Ignoring PI conversion at PI-heavy campuses while building a consulting CV story.
- Treating a new IIM consulting offer as the plan rather than upside after a thin Tier 1 shortlist.
- Skipping summer case prep because “finals will be different.” Summers feed PPOs.
- Comparing Ahmedabad’s MEP median to another school’s CTC median without normalizing definitions.
- Building a three-campus shortlist of only stretch brands with no protect campus for CAT downside.
Practical shortlist worksheet
- Write your target in one sentence (MBB / tier-1 strategy / Big-4 strategy / boutique).
- Rank A, B, C, L, K, I for that sentence only.
- Cross out campuses you cannot get calls from based on live policies.
- Among remaining calls, open fee circulars and consulting domain tables.
- Run the numbers on debt at 20% below median fixed cash if you are loan-financed.
- Accept the best consulting fit you can convert.

Offer share versus elite MBB density
Here’s the short version: a campus can look “consulting-heavy” on offer share while still placing most of those seats into Big-4 strategy, Accenture Strategy-style volume, and boutique advisory. Elite MBB partner-track density is a thinner slice. Both matter. They answer different questions.
Use offer share when you care about how many peers sit in consulting processes and how normal case prep feels on campus. Bangalore’s published consulting share near 45% of PGP+PGPBA finals and Kozhikode’s consulting near 32% of 2025 finals are share signals. Use firm lists and role quality when your plan is specifically MBB or tier-1 strategy. A long advisory list is recruiter breadth. It is not automatic McKinsey/BCG/Bain seat volume.
If you hold both calls to a high-share campus and a thinner-share campus with denser MBB lore, ask which risk you can live with: competing harder inside a crowded consulting cohort, or fighting for fewer elite seats with less peer case density. Read the PDF labels (“Consulting”, “Strategy”, “Advisory”) before you treat any percentage as MBB proof.
Ahmedabad, Bangalore, or Calcutta for consulting
If you convert more than one of A, B, and C, decide on culture and city, not on which WhatsApp tier sounds louder.
Prefer Ahmedabad when you want the strongest pan-India brand default, heavy case-method intensity, and IPRS MEP clarity on outcomes (Class of 2025 median MEP ₹34.59 LPA against a ₹27.50 lakh PGP 2025-27 fee). Detail: A vs B and A vs C.
Prefer Bangalore when Bengaluru staffing loops, product-adjacent strategy roles, and published consulting concentration near 45% of finals matter more than the loudest national badge. Domestic PGP 2026-28 fee ₹26.00 lakh with median ₹34.75 LPA is the fee/outcomes frame. Detail: B vs C.
Prefer Calcutta when Joka alumni routes into strategy and advisory fit your story, and you can convert a PI-heavy process. Finance-strategy crossover candidates often thrive here. Confirm the domestic fee circular and MBA placement downloads on the institute site before you treat lore as a number.
City still breaks ties. Prefer Bangalore for Bengaluru coffee-chat density. Prefer Ahmedabad for campus-centric case culture. Prefer Calcutta when national alumni routes and quant-comfortable classrooms match how you sell yourself in interviews.
Summers, PPOs, and the consulting convert path
Consulting finals rarely start from zero in December. Summers feed PPOs and final shortlists. Treat the first-year summer as part of the campus choice.
- Check whether the placement PDF reports summer consulting share separately from finals (Bangalore’s CDS materials have shown summer consulting near 47% in recent framing).
- Ask seniors how many consulting PPOs converted in the last two cycles, and into which firm tiers.
- Budget case drills before summer interviews, not after you return with a vague “I did a project.”
- Keep one non-consulting summer backup if your profile is thin on case hours.
If you skip summer consulting prep because “finals will be different,” you are betting against how most elite desks hire. PPO-heavy campuses reward early structure.
How to read consulting lines in placement PDFs
- Find the domain or function table and note the exact label (“Consulting”, “Strategy”, “Advisory”).
- Separate offer share from average CTC inside the domain.
- Check summer-to-PPO pathways where published.
- Ignore highest CTC.
- Cross-check firm lists if present; a long list is not the same as MBB seat volume.
If the PDF is vague, hedge. False precision creates fragile preferences.
Case prep is part of the campus choice
Brand opens first-round access. Case performance closes offers. Budget weekly case drills from the summer before finals, not from the week offers open. Pair campus shortlists with a prep calendar or you are buying a logo without a convert plan.
Who should not chase consulting
Skip a consulting-first shortlist if any of these are true:
- Your real identity is finance or markets (best for finance), and “consulting” is only the prestige synonym your relatives recognise
- You dislike structured problem-solving under time pressure, and case drills feel like punishment rather than practice
- You will not relocate or travel for client work, and every desk you want is location-locked
- Your fee plan only works if an elite offer lands, and you have no backup function you would actually accept
Consulting is a craft preference with a brand premium attached. If the craft is missing, a Tier 1 logo will not invent it in finals week.
Offer-stage checklist
- Keep at least one non-consulting backup function.
- Compare fee burden against expected year-one fixed cash.
- Re-read each shortlisted campus review’s “who should skip.”
- Confirm interview weights for campuses still in process (WAT/PI).

Frequently asked questions
Can I reach MBB from a new IIM?
Occasionally, yes. Probability and seat volume are usually lower. Treat it as upside, not the plan. Confirm names and role types in the latest PDF before you sell the story to yourself.
Is Ahmedabad mandatory for consulting?
No. It is the strongest default brand signal for many pan-India recruiters. Bangalore and Calcutta remain elite consulting feeders. Bangalore’s published consulting share near 45% of finals is hard to ignore if you convert the call.
Does a high consulting offer share mean MBB?
No. Offer share counts advisory and strategy seats across firm tiers. Accenture Strategy-style and Big-4 strategy volume can inflate share while MBB seats stay thin. Read firm lists and role quality beside the percentage.
Does Kozhikode’s #3 NIRF beat Lucknow for consulting?
Not automatically. Kozhikode’s 2025 consulting domain average sits near ₹33.13 LPA with about 32% offer share. Lucknow often wins on fee vs median salary for your household. Choose on call reality, budget, and campus fit.
How much do summers matter for consulting?
A lot. PPO pathways and final shortlists often start from summer desks. Check summer consulting share where published, and treat first-year case prep as non-optional if consulting is the plan.
Should consulting aspirants ignore ROI?
No. Elite offers do not erase unserviceable debt. Use best for ROI when fee gaps are material and consulting conversion is uncertain.
How do I read a placement PDF for consulting?
Find the function or domain table. Note exact labels (Consulting, Strategy, Advisory). Separate offer share from average CTC inside the domain. Check summer PPO paths. Ignore highest CTC as a planning input. Cross-check firm lists if published.
Where should I go next?
Start with the Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta reviews, then how to get into an IIM if your CAT plan still needs structure.
