When the result arrives

The CAT 2026 Information Bulletin says results are likely to be declared by the first week of January 2027. Scorecards are posted on iimcat.ac.in, and candidates may also get an SMS. The score is valid until 31 December 2027.

Results have come out earlier than the bulletin’s estimate in some years, so check the website daily from mid-December.

Data as of: October 2026. Shortlist and interview timing below follows recent cycles; each institute publishes its own dates.

The first 48 hours

  1. Download the scorecard and save it in two places. You will upload it, or its details, to several portals over the next three months.
  2. Write down six numbers: sectional and overall percentiles, plus scaled scores. Some institute formulas use scaled scores. See CAT score vs percentile.
  3. Re-rank your shortlist on real numbers. Drop campuses where you miss a published sectional minimum. Add one or two protection campuses if your percentile came in lower than planned. See how to shortlist IIMs.
  4. Open each target IIM’s admissions page and download the current year’s selection policy. Last year’s PDF is a starting point only.

CAT is a common test, and each IIM shortlists separately. The IIMs decide the weight of CAT, academics, work experience and diversity independently (Information Bulletin, Admission Process). Your percentile is one input among several.

Month by month: January to May

January: shortlists

  • Old and established IIMs start releasing interview shortlists, usually by email and on their portals.
  • The CAP portal opens for registration and programme opt-in.
  • Your job: check spam folders, keep the email address and mobile number you registered with active (the bulletin requires this throughout the process), and fill every form well before the deadline. Missed forms cost more calls than low percentiles do.

February to April: WAT/AWT and PI

  • Interview rounds run across cities, online or in person depending on the institute.
  • Formats differ: written ability tests (WAT), analytical writing tests (AWT, used by IIM Ahmedabad) or no writing round at all, then a personal interview.
  • Your job: prepare your profile story, a reading list of current affairs, and your academic subjects. Practise answering “why MBA, why now, why this campus” separately for each IIM. See WAT/PI guide.

April to May: first offers and waitlists

  • Institutes publish final merit lists, offers and waitlists on their own portals.
  • Acceptance usually needs a fee payment by a fixed deadline. Refund rules differ by institute.
  • Your job: compare offers on total fees, outcomes and fit before paying anything. See IIM fees and ROI and accept or decline an IIM offer.

May onwards: waitlist movement

Waitlists keep moving until programmes start. Track each campus separately and read the refund policy before paying a deposit that may need to move to a better offer.

Reading the shortlist season by percentile band

These bands are directional and assume General category. Your profile, category and the year’s pool matter as much as the number. See CAT percentile for IIM calls for the detail.

  • Very high percentiles with balanced sectionals: expect multiple standalone calls. Spend January on interview prep, not form-filling anxiety.
  • High percentiles: calls depend heavily on profile weights. Apply widely across standalone IIMs and opt into every CAP programme you would actually join.
  • Moderate percentiles: CAP and newer IIMs become the main track. Read each policy’s sectional minimums carefully.
  • Below the IIM floors: shift to non-IIM schools that accept CAT and check their deadlines early. Decide about a second attempt only after you know your outcomes.

Mistakes that cost calls

  • Letting the registered email lapse. All CAT and IIM communication goes to it.
  • Waiting for a cutoff blog. Institutes publish policies; read them directly.
  • Skipping CAP opt-ins. CAP needs you to opt into programmes. If you do not opt in, you are not considered.
  • Paying a non-refundable deposit early without reading the refund schedule.
  • Preparing one generic interview story for every campus.

Where to go next

Common questions

When will the CAT 2026 result be declared?

The Information Bulletin says results are likely by the first week of January 2027, on iimcat.ac.in.

How long is the CAT 2026 score valid?

Until 31 December 2027.

Do IIMs send interview calls automatically after the result?

Some shortlist directly from CAT data. Others ask for a form or portal registration after results, and CAP needs you to register and opt in. Check each institute’s admissions page.

When do IIM interview calls come out?

In recent cycles, shortlists have started in January, with interviews from about February to April. Each institute sets its own dates.

What is CAP?

The Common Admission Process, a shared shortlist and WAT/PI process run by one coordinating IIM for a group of newer IIMs. Each participating IIM still makes its own offers.

Can I use my CAT 2026 score for admission in 2028?

For IIM flagship MBAs, plan on no. The score is valid until 31 December 2027, which covers the batch starting in 2027. Admissions for 2028 batches use CAT 2027.

What if I do not get any IIM call?

Apply to non-IIM institutions that accept CAT before their deadlines close, then decide on a second attempt once your outcomes are clear.

Should I accept the first offer I get?

Only after comparing fees, outcomes and refund terms. Many candidates hold one offer while waiting on a waitlist elsewhere. Read the refund schedule before you pay.
