IIM Mumbai selection criteria

IIM Mumbai runs a standalone CAT-based MBA admissions process. Exact floors and composite weights live in the year’s policy PDF, not in CAP hearsay. Open the MBA (and OSCM/SM if relevant) policy before you forecast a call.

Who this process is for

If you want IIM Mumbai’s flagship MBA, treat Mumbai as a standalone selection system. It is not a CAP campus in the usual aspirant shorthand. You take CAT, Mumbai shortlists you under its own policy, then converts through interview and profile factors stated for that batch.

Primary sources to keep open: IIM Mumbai admissions, the linked MBA admission policy PDF, and specialised PDFs when relevant (MBA-OSCM policy). Pair with our IIM Mumbai review and the umbrella selection criteria explained guide. Data stamped September 2026.

How the process works

Mumbai’s spine is consistent even when tables move:

  1. Eligibility. Bachelor’s degree rules and CAT requirements for domestic applicants as stated on the admissions page and policy PDF for your year. Final-year students follow provisional rules in that PDF.
  2. Shortlist for interview. Mumbai builds a call list from CAT and profile factors published for the batch. Do not reuse Ahmedabad AWT intuition or CAP composite hearsay.
  3. Personal interview (and any written component named in the PDF). Confirm format on the call letter and policy note.
  4. Final offer. Merit after interview and remaining published components, under reservation rules for that year.

Two practical warnings. First, published minimum CAT percentiles are filters, not predicted call cutoffs. Second, Mumbai’s NIRF #6 brand does not mean its shortlist math matches Lucknow or Kozhikode. Read the PDF labelled for the CAT year you wrote.

Application fees on the public admissions surface (as of Sep 2026 page copy): ₹2,000 for General/OBC-Non Creamy and ₹1,000 for SC/ST/EWS/PwD for the relevant MBA lines. Confirm on the live form.

Programme lines: MBA vs OSCM vs SM

The admissions page markets more than one master’s line:

ProgrammeWho should open which PDFRisk if you ignore it
MBA (general)Default for role flexibilityMissing electives that still reach ops/product
MBA (Operations and Supply Chain Management)Ops-native careers; best for operationsApplying to the wrong line for your story
MBA (Sustainability Management)Sustainability-first narrativesForcing a general-MBA PI story onto an SM form

If your career is ops-native, the specialised OSCM line can be a feature, not a downgrade. If you want maximum consulting/finance/product flexibility, prefer the general MBA and use electives. Curriculum PDFs sit beside the policy files on admissions.

What to verify each year

When we cannot restate a year-specific weight table here without risking a stale number, open the institute PDF. That is the point of this companion: the live policy, not a coaching-site percentile promise.

Profile implications

CAT-heavy profiles. Treat every section as a separate contest. Weak sectionals can kill you even with a strong overall percentile if floors apply section-wise. Use CAT exam guide to protect floors.

Work-experience profiles. Ops and industrial backgrounds can fit the Mumbai story especially well, but experience does not replace CAT gates. In interview, be ready to explain why Mumbai’s labour market and heritage matter for your roles.

Fresher profiles. Possible when the year’s policy allows it. Do not assume fresher status is invisible or decisive without reading the score grid.

Writing and interview. Prepare with WAT/PI guide structure, then practice Mumbai-specific motivation: city use, ops or general-MBA intent, and honest fee readiness from Mumbai fees.

How Mumbai differs from Lucknow and Kozhikode

Versus IIM Lucknow, Lucknow’s recent flagship MBA policy framing is more explicit about high General CAT floors and CAT-heavy shortlist weights in published PDFs. Lucknow is a classic old-IIM residential process. Mumbai is a metro, heritage-ops process with specialised programme lines. Peer guide: Lucknow selection criteria. Accept-or-decline framing: Lucknow vs Mumbai.

Versus IIM Kozhikode, Kozhikode’s published 2026-28 path includes a mandatory Stage 1 registration email, board minima inside AIS, and a heavy final WAT weight. Mumbai’s prep load is different: open Mumbai’s own PDF rather than borrowing Kozhikode’s registration calendar. Peer guide: Kozhikode selection criteria.

Versus CAP campuses, do not assume a shared WAT bank or shared convert list. CAP context: CAP for IIMs explained.

What households get wrong with Mumbai’s policy PDFs

The most common process error is treating Mumbai as a CAP campus in aspirant shorthand. Mumbai runs a standalone CAT-based MBA admissions path. Families who reuse CAP composite hearsay, shared WAT banks, or convert-list tips waste cycles and mis-time forms. Confirm the year’s participation and process on the institute admissions page and in the CAP guide; do not assume yes.

A second failure is reading only the general MBA policy while the student intends MBA-OSCM or Sustainability Management, or the reverse. Each line has its own policy PDF on admissions. Ops-native applicants who force a general-MBA PI story onto an OSCM form, or consulting-bound applicants who apply OSCM because “Mumbai is ops,” invent a motivation gap interviewers notice. Decide the programme line before you write PI stories.

Published minimum CAT percentiles are filters, not predicted call cutoffs. Relatives who treat a floor as “you are safe above this number” confuse eligibility with shortlist odds. Profile weights for academics, work-ex, and diversity can lift or sink you; those weights live in the year’s PDF, not in coaching-site percentile memes. Weak sectionals can still kill a strong overall percentile if floors apply section-wise.

Application fees (₹2,000 General/OBC-NC; ₹1,000 SC/ST/EWS/PwD on the public surface as of Sep 2026) look small and get ignored. Missing a deadline or applying to the wrong line wastes more than the fee. NIRF #6 brand does not mean Mumbai’s shortlist math matches Lucknow or Kozhikode. Open the PDF labelled for the CAT year you wrote.

Offer-week and convert-week checks

After a call letter arrives, confirm whether WAT/AWT exists that year and what interview weight remains in final merit. Reusing Ahmedabad AWT intuition only transfers general writing muscle; Mumbai motivation questions differ. Practice city use, ops or general-MBA intent, and honest fee readiness from Mumbai fees so you do not convert into a cash crunch.

Document and refund rules sit beside selection math. Families who celebrate a convert without reading deposit clocks lose money when a parallel BLACKI offer appears later. Track waitlist notices on the admissions page. After offers, use the accept or decline checklist with the binding fee circular and the Batch of 2024 placement distribution in the same folder as the policy PDF.

Before you fill the form

  • Download the MBA policy PDF for your CAT year (and OSCM/SM if relevant)
  • Write floors and weights into a notebook; do not screenshot only the headline
  • Decide general MBA vs OSCM before you write PI stories
  • Model fee reality in Mumbai fees so you do not convert into a cash crunch
  • Track deadlines on the admissions page; waitlists move in public notices
  • After offers, use the accept or decline checklist

Frequently asked questions

Is IIM Mumbai part of CAP?

Do not assume yes. Confirm the year’s participation and process on the institute admissions page and in our CAP guide.

Can I reuse Ahmedabad AWT prep?

Only the general writing muscle. Mumbai’s published process and motivation questions differ. Read Mumbai’s PDF and call letter.

What is the difference between qualifying, call, and convert?

Qualifying floors let you stay eligible. A call/shortlist means you enter WAT/AWT and PI. Convert means the final composite produced an offer. Mixing the three layers is how percentile screenshots mislead. See cutoffs explained.

What changes in selection criteria every year?

Composite weights, application-rating tables, diversity points, and published floors can all move. Never reuse last year’s spreadsheet without opening this year’s institute or CAP PDF.

Do sectional cutoffs still matter if my overall percentile is high?

Yes at many campuses. Overall strength cannot paper over a failed sectional floor when the year’s PDF requires both. Confirm overall and sectional rows for your category in the live policy note.
