Our quick take
“ISB or IIM?” hides three different products. ISB’s flagship PGP is a one-year MBA for people with at least two years of work experience, admitted on GMAT or GRE. A two-year IIM MBA is a CAT-led programme that mostly admits freshers and early-career candidates. IIM one-year programmes (IIM Ahmedabad PGPX, IIM Bangalore EPGP, IIM Calcutta MBAEx, IIM Lucknow IPMX, IIM Indore EPGP) want five years or more of experience (four at Ahmedabad) and sit closest to ISB’s market.
Prefer a two-year IIM when you have under three years of experience, a strong CAT score, and want summer internships to test a function switch. Prefer ISB PGP when you have roughly three to six years of experience, a competitive GMAT or GRE, and the salary you give up in a second year matters more to you than a lower fee. Prefer an IIM one-year programme when you have six or more years of experience and want an audited, mid-career outcome table attached to an IIM badge. Your experience level, the test you can actually score on, and the cash you can lose decide this before brand does.
We score IIMs on iimHQ. ISB appears here as comparison context, anchored to its own fee sheet and placement material. Broader framing: IIM MBA vs other B-schools. Sister comparisons: IIM vs XLRI, IIM vs FMS.

Which product are you comparing?
Write down your months of full-time work experience as of 31 March of your intake year. That single number sorts most of the decision.
- Under 24 months: the regular ISB PGP intake is closed to you; ISB’s Young Leaders route is a separate deferred-admission track. Compare two-year IIMs with each other.
- 24 to about 60 months: ISB PGP and two-year IIMs are both live options. This is where the real “ISB vs IIM” fight happens.
- 60 months and above: IIM one-year programmes open up and become ISB’s direct competitors. A two-year IIM becomes a harder sell because you give up two years of a senior salary.
Applicants with four to five years of experience sometimes qualify for all three. Use the rest of this page to rank them.
Fees: ISB costs more in cash, less in time
ISB’s official PGP fee structure for 2027-28 lists:
| ISB PGP 2027-28 line | Shared accommodation | Studio accommodation |
|---|---|---|
| Admission fee incl. GST | ₹3,99,500 | ₹3,99,500 |
| Commitment fee incl. GST | ₹2,49,500 | ₹2,49,500 |
| Tuition | ₹26,64,000 | ₹26,64,000 |
| Accommodation | ₹2,34,000 | ₹5,36,000 |
| Grand total (with GST and ₹20,000 refundable deposit) | ₹40,46,520 | ₹44,45,000 |
Hospitalisation insurance is charged at actuals on top. ISB says it supports about a quarter of students each year through scholarships in nine categories, and its Class of 2027 announcement reports over ₹12 crore awarded to about 13% of that cohort. Treat any scholarship as upside until it is in your offer letter.
On the IIM side, the two-year fee anchors from our reviews are ₹27.50 lakh at Ahmedabad (PGP 2025-27), ₹26.00 lakh at Bangalore (2026-28 domestic), about ₹20.75 lakh at Lucknow and about ₹25.16 lakh all-in at Indore (2026-28). Calcutta’s domestic fee needs a fresh look at its circular. Fee detail: IIMA fees, IIMB fees, IIML fees, IIM Indore fees.
IIM Ahmedabad’s PGPX fee page lists ₹35 lakh for the 2026-27 batch in single housing and ₹37.10 lakh for married housing, excluding the international immersion. For IIMB EPGP, IIMC MBAEx, IIML IPMX and IIM Indore EPGP we could not open a current official fee schedule. Third-party listings cluster in the mid-₹20 lakh to low-₹30 lakh range; confirm on each institute’s admissions page before you budget.
Opportunity cost decides it more often than sticker fee. A candidate earning ₹15 LPA gives up about ₹15 lakh more salary on a two-year IIM than on ISB. At that point ISB’s ₹13 lakh or so higher sticker fee against IIM Ahmedabad roughly cancels out. At ₹25 LPA the one-year format wins on cash. At ₹6 LPA with one year of experience, the two-year IIM wins easily and ISB is not open to you yet. Run your own numbers in the ROI calculator and the fees and ROI method.
Admissions: GMAT or GRE versus CAT
| Path | Test | What else counts |
|---|---|---|
| ISB PGP | GMAT or GRE, test-centre only | Essays, work experience quality, interview; rounds with earlier-round scholarship preference |
| Two-year IIM | CAT | Institute-specific shortlists, academics, diversity points, WAT/AWT and PI (selection criteria explained) |
| IIMA PGPX | GMAT or GRE (Focus edition accepted), age 25+ | Essays, interview |
| IIMB EPGP | GMAT or GRE | Composite of academics, test score, work quality, writing test, interview (IIMB EPGP admissions) |
| IIM Indore EPGP | GMAT, GRE, or CAT 2025/2026 | Interview; five years of paid post-graduation experience (IIM Indore EPGP) |
ISB’s Class of 2025 recorded an average GMAT of 719, an average age of 27 and average work experience of four years, per its Placement Report 2025-26. That is a different applicant pool from a CAT batch dominated by candidates with zero to three years of experience.
If you have only prepared for CAT, sitting GMAT is a separate project of two to four months. If you are already strong on GMAT, the IIM one-year programmes reuse that score, which makes applying to ISB plus two or three of them a sensible portfolio.
Placements and salary: read the definitions first
The “iim vs isb salary” question usually compares numbers that were measured differently. Keep each figure next to its label:
| Programme | Figure | Label as published | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| ISB PGP, Class of 2026 | ₹37.29 LPA | Average salary; 1,117 offers; highest ₹1.56 crore | ISB press release, April 2026 |
| ISB PGP, Class of 2025 | No salary figures in the report | 816 students, 364 companies, 1,164 offers; consulting 34% of placements | ISB Placement Report 2025-26 |
| IIMA two-year MBA, Class of 2025 | ₹34.59 LPA median, ₹35.50 LPA average | MEP, IPRS audited | IIMA review |
| IIMB PGP + PGPBA, 2024-26 | ₹34.75 LPA median | As published by IIMB | IIMB review |
| IIMA PGPX, 2026 | ₹37.78 LPA median, ₹41.48 LPA mean MEP; ₹32.16 LPA median fixed cash | Domestic offers (132), IPRS audited | PGPX Finals 2026 IPRS report |
| IIMC MBAEx, 18th batch (2025) | ₹32.88 LPA median, ₹35.37 LPA average CTC | 72 students, 76 offers | IIMC MBAEx statistics |
| IIML IPMX, Class of 2026 | ₹31.56 LPA average of top 50% | 114 students; overall median not published | IIML IPMX report 2026 |
What this table supports:
- ISB’s average sits in the same band as the top two-year IIMs, earned by a class with about four years more experience than a typical IIM PGP batch. Per year of experience, the two-year IIMs at A and B are at least as strong.
- ISB publishes an average and no median. A mean with a ₹1.56 crore top offer runs above what the middle student earns. IIMA’s PGPX audited table shows how far apart the numbers can be: domestic mean MEP ₹41.48 LPA against median fixed cash ₹32.16 LPA.
- IIMA PGPX is the only one-year option here with an IPRS-audited table. Of 139 who sought placement, 134 accepted offers and 5 were unplaced.
Definitions: MEP, CTC, IPRS. Method: how to read IIM placement reports.
Brand and network
ISB is not in the NIRF 2025 management list, so NIRF cannot compare it with IIMs. ISB’s own report cites international rankings (FT Global MBA 2025, #1 in India). Inside India, recruiter perception splits by experience level:
- Freshers and early career: The IIM tag, especially A, B, C, L and K, is the stronger default signal. ISB does not compete here.
- Three to eight years of experience: ISB is the established domestic default for consulting, tech product and BFSI lateral hiring. Its 1,100-plus offers a year show how big that recruiter base is.
- Eight years and above: IIMA PGPX and IIMB EPGP compete directly with ISB for senior roles. Brand travels with the parent IIM.
Alumni size matters too. A two-year IIM gives you a cohort of roughly 400 to 600 who shared a two-year residential tournament. ISB gives you about 800 to 840 per year across two campuses in a compressed year.
Learning experience
ISB PGP. About 12 months split into terms, no summer internship, heavy recruiting overlap with coursework. Two campuses (Hyderabad and Mohali) with a shared curriculum and faculty rotation. The format suits people who know which function they are moving into.
Two-year IIM. First-year core, summer internship, second-year electives. The summer lets you test a function before final placements, which is why we prefer it for people unsure of their target role.
IIM one-year programmes. Smaller classes (PGPX had 156 placement-eligible students in 2026; MBAEx 72 seeking placement; IPMX 114), older peers, and recruiters hiring for middle and senior management. The IIML IPMX runs from the Noida campus, while the others sit on the parent campus.
Who should prefer which
Prefer a two-year IIM if
- You have under three years of experience and a CAT percentile that converts A, B, C, L, K or I calls
- You want a summer internship to test a switch
- You want the strongest domestic brand signal for your stage
Prefer ISB PGP if
- You have about three to six years of experience and a GMAT or GRE in ISB’s range
- Your current salary makes a second year off work expensive
- Your target is consulting, tech product or BFSI lateral entry, the sectors that produced over three-quarters of ISB’s Class of 2025 offers
Prefer an IIM one-year programme if
- You have six or more years of experience and want senior-role recruiting with an IIM badge
- You want an audited outcome table (IIMA PGPX) or a lower all-in fee than ISB
- You already hold a strong GMAT score and want to apply to several programmes on it
Common mistakes
- Comparing ISB’s average with an IIM median.
- Comparing ISB with a two-year IIM when your experience points you to an IIM one-year programme.
- Ignoring opportunity cost and judging only on sticker fee.
- Treating “ISB is not ranked by NIRF” as a quality signal. Absence from the list says nothing about placement outcomes.
- Skipping GMAT because CAT went well, then discovering at 30 that the one-year options need it.
Before you accept or decline
- Get the exact fee schedule from your offer letter, including GST and housing.
- Model EMI against median fixed cash, not average CTC.
- For ISB, ask alumni in your target function what the middle of the class earned.
- For an IIM one-year offer, open that programme’s own report. PGP numbers do not carry over.
- Read refund and commitment-fee deadlines before you hold two seats. See accept or decline an IIM offer.

Frequently asked questions
Is ISB better than IIM?
It depends on your experience. For candidates with three to six years of experience, ISB PGP is often the stronger option because it costs one year of salary instead of two. For freshers and early-career candidates, the top two-year IIMs are the stronger brand, and ISB is not open to anyone under 24 months.
ISB vs IIM Ahmedabad: which should I pick?
If you have under three years of experience and a CAT score that converts, take IIMA’s two-year MBA. If you have five or more years and a strong GMAT, compare ISB PGP directly with IIMA PGPX. PGPX costs ₹35 lakh (2026-27, single housing) against ISB’s ₹40.47 lakh grand total (2027-28, shared housing), and it publishes an IPRS-audited median.
Who earns more, ISB or IIM graduates?
ISB reported an average salary of ₹37.29 LPA for its Class of 2026. IIMA reported a median MEP of ₹34.59 LPA for its two-year Class of 2025, earned by a much younger class. IIMA PGPX reported a domestic median MEP of ₹37.78 LPA for 2026. Compare like with like: same metric, same experience band.
Can I get into ISB with CAT?
No. ISB PGP takes GMAT or GRE scores from a test centre. Of the IIM one-year programmes we cover, only IIM Indore’s EPGP also takes CAT.
Is the IIM one-year MBA the same as an executive MBA?
PGPX, EPGP, MBAEx and IPMX are full-time, residential one-year programmes with campus placements. Weekend or online executive MBAs from IIMs are different products with no placement process. Check the programme name on the brochure.
Should I take a two-year IIM with three years of experience?
It can still make sense if you want a summer internship to switch functions or your salary is modest. With a salary above roughly ₹15 LPA, the one-year options usually come out ahead on cash. Run the ROI calculator.
