IIM vs IIT MBA: SJMSOM, DMS, VGSoM and DoMS Against the IIMs

Our quick take

For a CAT taker, “IIM or IIT” means a choice between an IIM’s flagship MBA and the MBA run by an IIT’s management school: Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management (SJMSOM) at IIT Bombay, the Department of Management Studies (DMS) at IIT Delhi, Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSoM) at IIT Kharagpur, or the Department of Management Studies (DoMS) at IIT Madras.

Prefer an older IIM (Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Kozhikode, Lucknow, Indore, Mumbai) over any IIT MBA when you hold the call and can fund the fee. Their published medians sit clearly higher and the recruiter base is wider. Prefer IIT Bombay SJMSOM or IIT Delhi DMS over newer IIMs when the fee gap matters, you want Mumbai or Delhi-NCR, and their latest medians (₹26 LPA at SJMSOM, about ₹22.5 lakh at DMS) beat the IIM call you hold. Treat VGSoM and DoMS as peers of the mid-tier IIMs such as Raipur and Trichy, and decide on fee, city and the latest report.

IIT or IIM: which is tougher, better, or pays more?

Searches for “iim vs iit” often mix three questions. Answer them separately.

Which is tougher to get into? IIT undergraduate seats go through JEE Advanced after Class 12. IIM MBA seats go through CAT after graduation, followed by institute shortlists and interviews. They test different things at different ages, so a single “tougher” ranking does not hold. For an MBA aspirant the relevant comparison is CAT cutoffs: SJMSOM reported a median CAT percentile of 98.87 for its 2024-26 batch, which sits in the same band many older IIMs shortlist at. Which is better? For a BTech, the IITs are India’s engineering benchmark, and IIMs do not offer engineering degrees. For an MBA, the older IIMs lead on NIRF (except IIT Delhi at #4) and on published medians. Many IIM students are IIT graduates; the two are often sequential steps.

Who earns more? Comparing IIT BTech packages with IIM MBA packages mixes a 22-year-old fresher hire with a post-MBA hire. Compare IIT MBA reports with IIM MBA reports, as in the snapshot above. On that basis, the top IIMs pay more at the median than any IIT management school, and IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi sit above the newer IIMs.

Fees: the IIT advantage

IIT MBA fees run well below older IIM fees. IIT Delhi DMS’s 2026 offer letter asks general, OBC and EWS candidates for ₹3,22,400 as the first-semester instalment. We could not open an official full-programme fee notice for SJMSOM, VGSoM or DoMS for 2026-28; third-party listings put all four IIT programmes roughly in the ₹10 lakh to ₹16 lakh band before hostel and mess. A rough rule: against an older IIM, an IIT MBA can save around ₹10 lakh in fees (verify the IIT figure) while paying less at the median, by about ₹1.5 LPA (Kozhikode against SJMSOM) to more than ₹16 LPA (Bangalore against DoMS). Against Raipur or Trichy, IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi save on fee and pay more at the median. Run your own numbers in the ROI calculator using the fees and ROI method.

Placements: headline figures and definitions

Keep each figure with its label:

• SJMSOM, Class of 2024-26: 126 students, 51 recruiters, median CTC ₹26 LPA, average CTC ₹28.16 LPA, highest ₹53.80 LPA, 35.7% PPO rate. The report states 100% placement.
• DMS IIT Delhi, Class of 2023-25: median ₹22,50,782, average ₹22,52,966, highest ₹43,55,300, “98% placement”. The report does not say whether these are CTC or fixed pay.
• VGSoM, Class of 2023-25: 142 students, 139 participated, 139 placed, median CTC ₹22.15 LPA, average CTC ₹22.75 LPA, highest ₹37.63 LPA. Strategy and consulting took 45% of roles.
• DoMS IIT Madras, Class of 2024-26: batch of 86, median ₹18 LPA, average ₹18.3 LPA, highest ₹40 LPA. Consulting was the largest domain at 30%.

None of the four IIT reports we read states an IPRS audit, while IIM Ahmedabad’s does. That makes like-for-like comparison harder. Read definitions with our guide to placement reports, and the glossary entries for CTC, MEP and IPRS.

Batch size matters too. DoMS (86) and SJMSOM (126) are small enough that a few large offers move the average. The medians are more useful.

Admissions

All four IIT schools admit through CAT followed by their own shortlist and interview, so a CAT taker can apply to both sets without a second exam. Shortlist rules and weights differ by school and by year. IITs typically favour engineering and quantitative backgrounds; SJMSOM’s 2024-26 batch was mostly engineers with an average of 25 months of work experience, and DMS’s 2023-25 batch was 67% engineers with 19.7 months average experience.

Brand, campus and city

IIT Bombay SJMSOM. Powai campus in Mumbai with finance, consulting and tech recruiting nearby. The IIT Bombay name helps in tech and product roles. A strong pick for engineers who want to stay in Mumbai, and a direct competitor to IIM Mumbai in the same city.

IIT Delhi DMS. Highest-ranked non-IIM in NIRF 2025 (#4). Delhi-NCR location for consulting, IT services and sales roles. Prefer it over newer IIMs when NCR matters.

IIT Kharagpur VGSoM. Large, residential, remote campus with a deep IIT alumni base. Strong consulting share. Compare it with mid-tier IIMs on fee and median.

IIT Madras DoMS. Small batch on the Chennai campus, with a tech and operations tilt. Its median sits at the level of mid-tier IIMs such as Raipur.

Older IIMs. Larger recruiter pools, wider sector spread, alumni in senior general management. The IIM name carries more weight than an IIT MBA in most non-tech general management roles.

Who should prefer which

Prefer an older IIM if

• You hold an A, B, C, K, L, I or Mumbai call and can fund the fee
• You want consulting, finance or general management with the widest recruiter base
• You want an IPRS-audited report (Ahmedabad) or a long placement track record

Prefer IIT Bombay SJMSOM or IIT Delhi DMS if

• Your best IIM call is a newer or mid-tier IIM
• Fee control matters and Mumbai or Delhi-NCR is your target market
• You are an engineer aiming at tech, product or operations roles

Prefer VGSoM or DoMS if

• They beat your available IIM calls on fee and city after you read both latest reports
• You want a tech or operations tilt at a lower fee

Common mistakes

1. Comparing IIT BTech packages with IIM MBA packages.
2. Comparing an IIT average with an IIM median, or CTC with MEP.
3. Choosing on the IIT name for a general management career where IIM recruiters dominate.
4. Ignoring batch size when reading a highest or average figure.
5. Declining an older IIM call to save fees without modelling the median gap.

Before you accept or decline

• Download the latest final placement report for both schools and write down median, average and the label on each.
• Get the full fee schedule including hostel, mess and deposits.
• Model EMI against the median, not the highest offer.
• Talk to second-year students in your target function at both schools.
