CAT to offer path

CAT (Common Admission Test) is the primary entrance exam for flagship two-year IIM MBA and PGP programmes. It is a common test. After scores release, each institute applies its own shortlist rules. Many newer campuses share interview logistics through CAP; BLACKI and some others run standalone processes.

Treat the live bulletin on iimcat.ac.in as law for pattern and eligibility. Coaching percentile charts are secondary. For exam structure and timeline, start with the CAT exam guide.

Typical sequence

  1. Eligibility and registration. Confirm degree percentage floors and documents in the year’s information bulletin before you treat mocks as destiny.
  2. Exam. Section-timed CBT. Percentiles, not raw marks, drive most shortlist formulas.
  3. Shortlists. Institutes publish calls using CAT plus academics, work-ex, and diversity weights. See selection criteria and cutoffs explained.
  4. WAT / PI (or CAP PI). Conversion stage. Prep differently for BLACKI composites versus CAP clusters. See the WAT/PI guide and CAP guide.
  5. Offers and waitlists. Re-check fee circulars and placement PDFs the week you pay. Checklist: accept or decline.

Frequently asked questions

Does a high CAT percentile guarantee an IIM call?

No. Percentile is an input to institute shortlist formulas that also weigh academics, work experience, diversity factors, and sometimes gender or academic discipline. Policies change by year. Read the live admissions policy for each campus on your list.

What happens after CAT for IIM admissions?

IIMs publish shortlists, then run Written Ability Test and/or Personal Interview stages (standalone or via CAP for many newer campuses). Final composites combine CAT, academics, interview performance, and other policy weights. Offers and waitlists follow each institute’s calendar.

Is CAP the same as getting into every new IIM?

No. CAP is a shared interview logistics layer for participating institutes. Each campus still applies its own composite and issues its own offer. See the CAP guide for what is shared versus campus-specific.

Should I shortlist campuses before or after CAT?

Build a rough shortlist before the exam so mock targets and form choices stay honest. Re-rank after results with real percentiles, then check fees and career fit on the reviews. Do not wait for a single “cutoff list” blog post.
